Nice looking cars. The DSG gearbox is the best of it's type I understand.

The Focus ST (I know I'm biased) is reckoned to be better again however.

Drove one for a test drive but bought a manual GTI

Not being used to automatics I just found I felt awkward in it and couldn't appreciate it.I felt more at home in a manual.

Bungle there's quite a few lads with them on www.vagdrivers.net if you want to look there.

I have a manual one myself, I took a car which had already landed in Ireland but I think I'd prefer a manual one anyway but the box is meant to be fantastic.

Thanks so far. I checked on VAG but no chat about it at all.

I used to work in a VW dealer and as such drove a good few GTI's, with and without the DSG. It depends on what you're used to, I prefer the manual because I prefer most manuals, but unlike alot of auto/semi-auto's I've driven I enjoyed driving the DSG

I meant loads of fellas have them as in *start* a post about DSG! There'll be more feedback than here as it's a specialist VW site.

I test drove a DSG last week and ordered one on the spot. Luckily the exact spec and colur (white) I wanted is sitting in Cork waiting to be despatched to the dealer so I should have it in about 10 days.

I currently drive an Alfa GT selespeed which in operation is the same as DSG, but nowhere near as good.

What makes DSG so good is the smoothness of the changes.

This is because its a double clutch system which means gears 1,3 and 5 and 2,4,and 6 are constantly engaged waiting to be selected.

Theres no jerkiness in the change which you do get in other systems, such a s Selespeed.

In general I love the semi automatic system.

You can drive in fully automatic mode. If youre in a high gear at low speeds and you accelerate the system automatically drops to the optimum gear and youre away.

You can drive using the box sequentially through the gearshift. Push forward to go up a gear, back to drop a gear. This can be very handy when you need to stop in a hurry, just drop a couple of gears and stand on the brakes.

You also have paddle shift on the DSG, and you can drive in automatic but then intervene to change gear manually if you wish.

When you stop or slow the box changes down by itself too

DSG now comes with launch control which is a bit cool. It works by knocking off the ESP button and holding the brake with your left foot. The revs rise to 3000 RPM and you take your foot off the brake. Then as soon as you hit the accelarator again its off in a shot.

Great system, really can't wait to get my hands on it :D

I agree that the DSG is very smooth in changing up,there was a definite jerk on downshift, slight but very noticeable to me. This 'demo' model was the salesmans' own GTI with about 7000 km on it.

do u know how far the build date was after the order?
the one i ordered is quoted for build week 8 2006, not sure how long delivery from factory takes.
i know theres a shortage of dsg boxes, so dsgs are taking longer to build but vw are working on the problem

Mine was week 51 which was Christmas week I think.Generally delivery takes about 2/3 weeks after build

You remembered about the 1.4 Sportline !! I sold that last March and bought a 97 A3, my priorities changed, but now I'm back. Man I missed those 17's.
Got 5k for the Audi, his little book was saying 5.5k for a 98 A3 with 72k miles, it was probably as good as it will get.

I was told bby a dealer in Swords that the DSG problem/shortage is now sorted and that delivery would be the usual 10 weeks.

Now, next question, I'm not sure but am thinking about leather....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,017 ✭✭✭lomb

Can i ask how you sold the sportline, they are a beautiful car, i test drove one recently but went with the comfort as they dont do a 1.6 fsi in automatic sportline.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 558 ✭✭✭mrbungle

Sold it in cbg.ie, a real tale of woe.

Guy who bought it was a spod and his father was guaranteeing the loan. He got really involved, I felt like a criminal with all the questions I was being asked. I was being very honest and transparent.

I kept telling BOTH to contact their own banks about how to do the money transfer, neither did, actually come to think of it, neither listened to any advice I gave about the money transfer.

This is how anal is got: The father wanted to pick me up and go and witness him hand the cheque over to the finance company. He said: Right I'll pick you up on Monday and we'll head down to the company. I said no, I live in Swords, he said no problem I'll pick you up !!

I said NO. The finance company is in SHANNON are you insane ????!!!!!????
His reply was well how are we going to do this, I gave him all his options including ask your branch !!! This was really p!ssing me off, and this kind of carry-on went on for about 2 week, both of them ringing me most evenings.

After a load of crap, I called off the deal and said if he wanted the car I wanted more money.

This is how retarded it got. I had the car 8-9 months, no service warning on dash and I didn't have the oil changed either. A week before I advertised it, a message came on the dash looking for some oil. I checked the manual and put small doses in over a few days, message went. Too care not to over dose and mess up the cat.

The guy aske me about service history, which I had already outline, I told the guy this was the only message I had gotten in 8 months.

He wanted the name of a mechanic in the garage I bought it from, told him to go and ring, I asked why. He said he was concerned that there was an oil problem with my car, I told him that oil is a consumable and cars use it !!! This VW just happened to have a computer that thinks for you. He didn't believe me.

Another thing was that he rang looking for the log book and registration cert, now this car was a 2004 and as far as I remembered but wasn't sure, both documentation are now 1 cert, (Which they were), I spent about 2 hours looing around the gaff but suspected that there was now only 1 cert.

I checked the web and it's true recent cars, dunno the date, have only 1 cert. This gimp insisted that there was 2 and that I must have the other, I told him to check the web. He said his neighbour had a 05 car and they had 2 docs, I told him to ring them and check the web. Of course he had no web, so I told him to ring his f-ing neighbour with the 2 certs and get her to check the web.

What a headwreck. There was a load of other nonesense that went on.

I almost didn't bother, but alas Trevor in the Army in Kildare, somewhere near Newbridge if it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have taken a step back to a 97 A3 and 2 large steps forward to a new '06 GTI.

No doubt you'll have put a load of gaudy pubesant mods reminiscent of your g@y punto onto that nice looking 1.4.

I also had the car advetised on this site but no takers, just admirers.

I've normally had to wait 3 months for VWs/Audis but this time around, I asked the guy I buy them off to see what was sitting in Cork already. I was only concerned with black and 18s and there was one just off the boat which nobody owned so a week later it was on my driveway.

I'll more than likely get another GTI again and this time I'll go for xenons, 18s, leather and climate but there's a lot to be said for getting a car in stock.

I've done the same thing. Ordered a car that was sitti in NVD in Cork.

How long did it take you to get it. I've been told 2.5 weeks, but a mate of mine spotted the car in MDL who are the distributors on the Naas Road.

Just cant wait to get my hands on it

Was your car in Cork when you ordered it? Was it sent from there to a Dublin dealer?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 596 ✭✭✭DirtyDog

No they had it in stock reg'd and all (this was Belgard back in October). They said a guy canceled his order at the last moment...but you can never tell.

I actually waited for my previous golf - 2.0 tdi, only had it 9 months! but fell in love with the GTI once I saw and drove it. I actually miss the torque of the TDi but the GTI just has a dif feel to it. Its hard to describe....you'll know soon enough ;)

id say the tdi 140 bhp would be lovely with dsg as diesels have such a narrow power band and u have to work the box

I delt with Lydia, found her very nice. Having delt with 3 other VW dealers over the past few years. Belgard are the best of a bad bunch (car dealers in general).

Mine's manual but test drove both and loved the DSG, I actually loved the DSG, strange but I tend to sit in a lot of Dublin traffic so would be a "nice to have" but wasnt prepaired to wait 3 months for it.

Have you test drove either yet?? What are you currently driving? - Sorry dont mind this I just read back, should be a nice change from the Alfa (dont get me wrong I like Alfas)

Yeah Lydia's a nice girl, I met her when I was window shopping cars and not at the stage where I was going to buy.

Went in last week and got collared by another sales guy who found the car in cork, gave me a test drive and sorted it out for me.

But I have to say he was a total tool. What is it with this new breed of young main dealer salesmen. Greatest collection of plonkers who think theyre doing you a favour to sell you a car.

Regret I didnt do the deal with Lydia to be honest.

By the way did you notice how many foxy female sales people they have in there. 3 crackers in the VW section alone.

Dont tell me the guy looked about 20, blondish hair? I actually picked the car up from him (Lydia was off) and he started giving me the sales pitch - I actually told him to save it, I had already bought the car!! if its him, then yes a total and utter tool.

As for the ladies, why do u think I've been back there so often :):):) Lydia was/is cool - def will be going back to her.

Keep us up todate on when you get your pick up date, I'd love to give the DSG another try, might just stop back up there !

Ive found annesley on richmond road very friendly and reasonable, i make it a point to stear clear of belgard. every time i wnet in there and asked whats the best they could do, they got very defensive and started asking what otehr dealers id been to and what discounts id been offered and they wouldnt give me a price.
ended up buying from annesley very straightforward and a pleasure doing business with them tbh.

    Funny you say that.

I'm actually buying my car thru an Alfa dealer who's getting it thru Belgard.

The reason why ........ The Alfa dealer offered me €6000 more for my trade in than Belgard. And thats for an 05 car.

On the subject of the talent in Belgard there used to be a stunning if a little dizzy blond working in the Audi section, always dressed in a mini skirt and with her blouse unbuttoned way down.

I was in a few times talking to her and if I'd had the money could have been talked into buying anything she suggested.

    A cracker!

I've been told by the dealer that they are.

The VW website says they are an option but I've heard from a few different places that they now come as standard.

It's weird how people see things differently...

I'll never set foot in Belgard again. They offered me nearly a full E3,000 less on a trade than Grange gave me and the guy I deal with in Grange (Mark Kane) will bend over backwards to help you if he can.

Lydia called me after I had went with Grange (for the 3dr time) offering me the lesser figure and it gave me great pleasure telling me how much extra I got. Ok looking bird, but it's what you get for your car that counts lads ;)

Ahh always ment to try there, but you know your self - you get comfortable going somewhere and when you know your getting a good deal (which I did) then you tend not to look else where. Next car I will def be looking around, if not just for the fun of it!

    Are you still there ?

Nope, unfortunately. I'm hoping to go back during the summer. I was a valeter there and managed to sell an A4 Cabriolet one extremely busy day, I was bringing stuff to the showroom, and some customer started asking me about the car and bought that day.

If you're going there, Conor is a very decent guy, he'd nearly bend over backwards to help any of us in the workshop

The good news is that the paddles ARE standard.

Although the automatic mode is so bloody good you probabaly wont touch them for a long time.

Best of luck with it. Nice cars.

The Focus ST is supposedly a better car, and is many thousands cheaper, despite having a 2.5 litre 5 cylinder engine, and more power. Auto. box is not an option on them however.

    Yeah,

GTI, DSG, Black, arm-rest and leather (beige). Week 14 build, I think I if remember. Can't wait. I read a bit about the DSG and reckoned it was to be.

    Sounds excellent, only 1 problem, I can't wait !!

I had a 04 MkV 1.4 before this, had a smart set of whips on it too, I shouldn't have gotten rid of it so soon, still wouldn't be at this stage if I didn't !!

    Pic of my old MkV

Just saw a review for the RS on 5th Gear and I'm not a fan. Horses for Courses, never been a fan of Ford.
