Depends, bottled water would be better if the brand isn't fluoradated.
Tastes better most of the time too.

I have a well at home so my water is lovely, no nasty flouride or anything. Nice and natural.

Have a well too, tap water is far nicer than any of the bottled waters. Can anyone remember which is better for tea and stuff - hard or soft water?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 595 ✭✭✭Just The One

As far as I am aware - there is no regulation on bottled water so you are usually safer drinking the tap water

Hard water is better tasting AFAIK, so I'd assume that would carry on to tea/coffee. I *think*, but I'm probably wrong.

What's funny is, if water was truely pure, it wouldn't taste of anything, so all these "great tasting, pure mineral waters" probably aren't that pure.

    Filter water all the way.

Defo go with bottled water. At least you know what your getting.
If you live in a city or slightly built up area I wud strongly advise bottled, I jus dont trust the councils anymore to ensure that the water is not contaminated. Natural spring water is the buisness but thats only if ur hooked up to a well r sumthin!

I have heard that bottled water has 25 times more chlorine(sp?) than tap water. Have you ever noticed if you leave bottled water in a bottle for a week it tastes ok but if you did it with tap water its complete cak

    britta filter.

the only job. I use it for cooking & the kettle too, you can see the difference in a cup of tea - you dont get that cloudy sh*t on the top.

tap water generally except in Waterford City it isnt so nice though so i would choose bottled here

Penn & Teller Bullsh1t did an episode in Series 1 about bottled water. It's episode 7. Get it if you can. It exposes the whole bottled water phenomena and shows how some companies are just filtering municipal tap water and then bottling and labelling it (Dasani) as pure spring mineral water.

It's all in the mind folks.

tap water at home in mullingar even with cleptosporidium Sp? tastes fine but the water in galway is kinda gross especially in city centre tea just dosent taste the same here!!!

Tap water - I'm a cheap student. BUT. I think it tastes much better if you leave it in the fridge.

tap water. Drink about 3or 4 litres of it a day usually so dont really mind the taste, unless its from somewhere where i usually dont drink from and its not good

No to fluoride and chlorine so bottled or filtered for me thanks.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Tap water in Ireland anyway, We pay enough for stuff besides water which we are lying up to our knees most of the time!

The nicest Bottled Water I have ever had is "Poland Springs" in New York, I was out there last August and it was the nicest stuff ever, I guess that the 35 to 40 degrees helped it too. Where I was staying we were going through a 24 pack a day with 500ml bottles. I then preceeded to catch an awful headcold from having freezing cold Air-con on all the time. Poland Springs excellent stuff.

Yet you trust some company, in an industry with no regulation. For all you know they could be simply reselling tap water with additives.

I cannot believe that bottled water is winning the poll, but then again, this country has gotten so distorted in it's view of things. I mean if something is free and a slight variation of it is really expensive what would you buy? And if you're worried about the standard of water(cos there's been hundreds of tap water related deaths and illness recently  ) then get a Brita filter. I believe it's this stupid mentality people have that you "get what you pay for", that higher prices and brand names make a product better, or in this case "safer".

Well, tbh, most brands of bottled water on sale in Ireland are internationally known and trusted. Not everywhere is going to have perfect tap water (judged by taste or otherwise), so bottled water is a viable option. It's all up to the individual really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,469 ✭✭✭Pythia

I prefer tap water. Has a better taste to it. Bottled water doesn't taste as fresh.

Indeed, also well water is the best.
No way am I paying for water either.

idiotically i spend 1.50 euros every morning for a bottle of river rcok. finish the bottle before noon and always refill from tap for the rest of the day. the idea is to have a disposable bottle around and throw it whenever i like. stupid i guess. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,061 ✭✭✭✭Terry

have no idea why, but bottled water gives me indigestion. i drink it sometimes if i'm on site and have no access to a tap, but i prefer tap water. drink about 5 pints every day.

I used to love the water at home but I noticed its changed in the past month/2.
There's FAR more clorine in it, you can't even drink it.

Pity, I miss nice tap water.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 936 ✭✭✭marshmallow

Tap water tastes better imo. If I was worried it was a bad area I wouldn't drink it but I think it generally tastes nicer and it's always cold.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

I worked in a water production shop for a while. We just filtered tap water and put it into bottles. Not sure if that's industry standard but it was for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,483 ✭✭✭Töpher

Prefer tap water. Drink 4+ litres in a day, so to drink bottled water would bankrupt me anyways :) It's nice down here anyways, wasn't so nice when I lived closer to the city.

Hello have you ever noticed d yukky crap in a kettle wen u leave the water there over night?

i'm not sure what your point is. he said that tap water goes cak when you leave it, same as you.

i'm fairly sure the crap you're talking about is lime which comes from hard water. it comes out of the water when you boil it and sticks to the inside of the kettle. it has nothing to do with how long the water's been there except that bits detatch from the side of the kettle and start to float around. the bits were there before that water was put in though

bottled water always reminds me of the episode of only folls and horses where they filled it from the tap. and the funny thing is its not far from the truth. coke had to take their brand (dasani) off the market because they were literally selling tap water. i usually get a 2 litre bottle of dunnes water for 32c and keep it behind the counter all day in work. i may not drink it all but i have the option of drinking four times as much for less than half the price (500ml river rock=78c)

I like tap water, what with all it's added nutrients.

Speaking of Coke actually, anyone ever notice those bottles/cans you get from some places that are from Eastern Europe or something like that? They always seem to taste different to me, wonder if it's to do with the water where it's made.

I'd like to be able to say tap water but given how variable the quality of it is in many areas and what may be in it bottled water gets my vote. Water that's been through a proper filtration system is an acceptabel substitute. I drink tap water at home (fairly consistent quality urban supply) and bottled water at work.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

When I'm in Kilkenny, I drink the tap water, but in the UK, I drink Bottled water, It's a pity I got a tast for Volvic when I was working in Statoil (Free Water) now I can;t even buy cheap bottled water, I only like Volvic.

Volvic mineral water is the best! Without doubt!!!

i prefer tap water. in my area it tastes grand and it always cold, but in some areas its doesnt taste right.
if im out and about and want water il buy an irish brand like tipperary.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭englander

I drink tap water in SE Ireland - but prefer the tap water in Yorkshire (crisp, cold and has a natural feel about it) !

Some bottled water has loads of sodium in it which is v.bad especially for kids (a bloke down the pub told me that - so must be true)

Why do people object to water people adding flouride to tap water ?
(Civil liberties ? Taste ? Something to moan about ?). I can only see it as being a good thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,692 ✭✭✭Loomis

    Third option:
    Tap water from your well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,563 ✭✭✭connundrum

I'd say about 50/50 most of the time. The tap water at home isn't so bad, but when out or at work its always bottled water. Except for Volvic water!! That cr@p tastes like humidified piss (eh.. not that I'd know what that tastes like in fairness..)

I remember bein hungover to bits one morning and comin down havin a pint of water from the tap, then I filled a second pint and put it down to catch me breath - only then did I notice the colour of the water. A pint of milk would've been less white! Couldn't see through the glass at all. Needless to say, most of the day was spent in the loving grasp of my toilet bowl :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Yes, and the water's to blame for that

Methinks maybe a combo of the 2lbs of Lime in the water + the actual thought of drinking 2lbs of lime + copious amounts of alcohol might = sick Dave.

    Sharing is caring :o

    *2lb is an inaccurate guess

Spring water is just filtered tap water. Mineral water is supposed to come direct from the spring.

Anyway, people are getting too paranoid about being clean. It is a theory that a lot of the modern diseases are down to the body reacting to us being too hygenic. For example there is a lot of evidence that some types of bowel disease (chron's disease & ulcerative colitis - do a search for "joel weinstock worm" in google) are caused because we don't have worms in our bowels anymore. They also suspect this could be the cause of asthma.
