Well since the book topic has come up in another thread.

What books did you all find good/bad?

I've read quite a few. Some good ones

Harrington on Holdem I & II - Dan Harrington
How Good is your Pot Limit Holdem - Stuart Reuben
How Good is your Pot Limit Omaha - Stuart Reuben
Pot Limit & No Limit Poker - Reuben & Ciaffone
Little Green Book - Phil Gordon
Super System - Doyle Brunson (& co)

    Some bad ones
Play poker like the pros - Phil Helmuth (yuck)
Championship Omaha - TJ Cloutier & Tom McEvoy

    Good ones:
The theory of poker (what a read!)
    Harrington on Holdem I&II
    Tournament poker for advanced player
    Holdem poker for advanced player
    Inside the poker mind
    Weighting the odds in holdem
    Small stakes holdem
Zen and the art of poker
    Phil gordon’s little green book
    Pot-Limit & No-Limit Poker

    Bad ones:
Super system (my first book on poker)
Championship No-limit and Pot Limit Hold'em (Championship Series)

    bad ones:
    sklansky's holdem for advanced players.
    Which should read:
A badly written guide to mid/high stakes limit ring games

    The Good:
Winning low limt holem by Lee Jones- great intro to the game
Theory of poker by Sklansky-essential for anyone serious about poker
Winning small stakes holdem by miller et al- possibly the best poker book out there at the moment
Super system- essential reading as it gives an insight into how one of the greats play. But shouldnt be taken out of context and imo has little use as an instructional text.

    The Bad:
Caros secrets of winning poker- Barely a book, the material is actually included in ss2
Zen and the art of poker- held in high regard but I found it just presented very basic poker info in a fancy way. not impressed.

    The Ugly:
Caros book of tells-badly needs to be updated
Internet Texas Hold'em: Winning Strategies from an Internet Pro by matt hilger- some good info but a very boring and diificult read, not great but not bad either.

I'm thinking of buying Harrington, can you buy it in town (Dublin) or do you have to order it, and how do proces compare? (I don't have a credit card so buying things on the internet is a pain in the hole.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,924 ✭✭✭shoutman

it's available in waterstones in jervis street, well was last time i checked i think. Alternatively you could get yourself a 3v card, www.3v.ie and buy a copy off www.amazon.ie

damn u culchie ;) , i was trying to stay out of this one.

yes, we have had every book known to man on poker previously but we're low stocked after xmas returns.

however if u want a book ring 6774754 (hodges figgis in dawson st) and ask to speak to the first floor staff who deals with the poker books.

please don't get me involved. amazon is cheaper for 2nd hand copies.

dit pokercan i have a quick look at the lingdren book on Saturday?

on the general subject all books are worth reading if only to be sure that you will never want to pick them up again. except mark strahans!

i've read 'em all and at this stage would say, make up ur own mind.

the poker books are kept near the dictionaries on the 1st floor.

i personally recommend harrington and brunson. i have all of sklanskys and admire/hate his stuff. read em all, u have nothing to lose.

the only ones i reread are 'zen and the art of poker' for wisdom, 'the education of a poker player' by herbert o yardley for storytelling greatness and Brunsons super system books for jaw dropping power playing fear inspiring fun.
    gl, d.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,838 ✭✭✭DapperGent

Pot and No-Limit Poker by Stewart Reuben and Bob Ciaffone is the only one I own. Only one I've read actually. :)

    It's really good.

And a home address in case we're passing.... :p

On Topic, I've read pretty much everything too.

    Harrington is my bible.
Brunson is also good I find, nice to take a bit from all the books to come up with your own style. But probably not for newbies - some pretty hairy stuff in there.

Looking forward to receiving Kill Phil.... Bloody Amazon.com takes months to get here from the States. Culchie have you received your copy yet, any good??

I would like to get my hands on a copy of this, have heard good things about it. I have Reuben's other two books, also the Harrington ones, also Theory of Poker, also the biography of Stu Ungar, also one or two others. If someone is willing to swap that'd be great, or I'll buy it off you if you think it's not worth keeping.

My copy of it is actually out on lend at the moment or I'd be happy to leave it in the Fitz/ with a mutual aquaintance. It is on Amazon though.

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0966100719/qid=1139386202/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/202-7361658-4071044

The best bit is when you have to learn London Low-Ball.

Just started reading the intro and foreword last night.

They are already making no apologies that the strategies in the book are aimed at results, and are mostly preflop techniques, and basically any top class pro is going to absolute hate the sight of you after 20 mins playing at his/her table. Indeed quite a few attempted to persuade the authors not to publish the book.
They also indicated that they got a panel of players to adopt the principles with very successful results.

So I look forward to the read, but no idea yet whether I can say it's a good book or a bad book.

I've been trying Hodges Figgus on and off since the start of the new year for Harrington's books, they keep telling me they'll be getting them soon, ended up ordering off Amazon in the end. I tried everywhere else in Dublin CC without any luck, you're better off getting a 3V card and order off the web, you'll probably have it in 3-4 days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,860 ✭✭✭ditpoker

i've gotten a couple of PM's about the erick lindgren book, i figure this weekend i'm going to bring my poker books to the vegasnights team game and IF/when i get knocket out go around swapping books with people. so my suggestion is if everyone could bring whatever books they're willing to swap to the vegasnights team event on saturday. i'll be bringing the erick lindgren book, matt lessinger's how to bluff and maybe one or two others. i'm looking for harrington books. gholimoli said he has both so that'll be pretty handy.

SATURDAY, FEB 11th - VN TEAM EVENT / BOARDS BOOK SWAPPING!

If any bookshop ever tells you "we have it ordered it will be in soon" go home and order of the internet. It will be quicker that way.
