If you check oasis.gov.ie you will find the legal requirements, but after that it depends entirely on your contract. Personally I have to give three months notice which is a bit of a pain.

Thanks for the reply, I just got a Finance Manager position and it is three months notice in the contract. I thought was a bit extreme but its standard for all managers

Standard for all managers there or in general? I think 3 months is excessive as it will be hard to tell a prospective employer that you are not free for a quarter of a year. Six weeks is a lot more reasonable in my opinion.

Congrats on the job by the way.

The higher you move up the chain, the more notice you're required to give because of the hassle of finding a replacement. If you're far up enough to be Finance Director, then any prospective employer will be willing to wait for you :)

CEOs have been known to require 6 or even 12 months before they can move on!

The law will only specify your minimum notice entitlements. If you agree to a notice period that's greater than the minimum, you're bound to it :)

They said its standard for all managers in the company. I have to sign the contracts in the next day or two and I don't think they will reduce the period down from three months.

Heres hoping I like the job now!:D

It's 2 weeks for me, but that's only because I've been there for more than 2 years.

My current notice period is 1 month.

My previous employer had a 1 month notice period as standard, 2 months for senior engineers and 3 months for managers.
