Problem with Memory Stick Pro Duo

    Hi,

I have a new enough 1GB Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo (High Speed.) I was using it for my PSP and it was working fine until last night when I started getting cyclic redundancy errors when I put some files on.

After messing around with it for a bit today I found that I could get it to the point where there was about 620-670megs of data free, before getting an error. I ran a disk scan thing (screenshot linked below) and it scans fine for a while but gets the same CRC error at a certain point, after which it cannot progress.

A format using the PSP's own formatting mechanism seems to work, as in, all of the files are removed and it goes back to FAT; but the errors are still there. If I format it in Windows it goes about a third, like the files and the disc scanner, and then gets stuck.

I should also mention that I tried it on another PSP and computer and I get the same errors.

Any help would be appreciated, and sorry for the longish post.

    Thanks.

Is it a genuine sony pro duo high speed or something else? (e.g. A dogey one from ebay).
A lot of the ebay ones are not what they say they are and have been know to give read/write errors after awhile.

    Hi,

It's what appears to be a genuine Sony Pro Duo High Speed, which I bought from eBay. Wasn't too dear, but that being said, any help would be much appreciated!

    Thanks.

If it was genuine I was going to say that it's covered under warrenty and bring it to a sony centre for repair/replacement.
But I'd be nearly 100% sure that it's a fake as most of the "High Speeds" on ebay are.
I have a 2Gb one of these ebay specials myself and so far so good it's holding up. It's a bit of a gamble with their quality.
I'm afraid that there's probably not to much you can do about the errors.
As a matter of interest how long was it working before it gave up? I'm just wondering about my own one.

    Edit:
See here. It shows how to spot a fake. While some of the stuff is specific to the 2Gb cards the things to note are the printing on the back, the quality of and the way the packaging was sealed and physical size of card.

    Hi,

I got it less than a month ago. Somewhere around the tenth of January.

My MS doesn't actually fail any of the tests in that thread, so maybe it's just faulty. I'll bring it down to the Sony Centre if it gives out completely, though, I think!

    Thanks.

Maybe its the real deal! Bring it down to them, they'll know pretty quick when they run the serial number if it's genuine and they should just replace it if it is.

Nice link. Looks like I actually bought a fake.

And to think I already gave the pr*ck positive feedback. :/

:D , If it was a 2Gb one don't be to worried yet. The one I got seems to be a pretty good quality knock off and holds the full 1900MB or whatever it is formatted.
Fingers crossed all's well so far after a few months.

Yeah, my one's currently got around 1800 megs on it. I knew it seemed a bit slower than I was expecting (had a loan of a 1GB one from a mate).

I posted your link in the games->console->playstation forum (but gave you credit :))

I got caught by the nads on this too...still, it works (for now) and came in at a 3rd of the price officials are going for; good guide...I ticked all the boxes both on this 2gb one and the old 512mb one :o

So what if these start cropping up on the FS forum? I think I've seen a few over the last couple of months...sellers may be genuinely unaware that they bought or are trying to sell counterfeit goods...

Main thing to look at is the price, if it's insanely low then it's to good to be true. The real high speeds go for hundreds of euro.

Maybe a warning sticky in the FS Forum letting people know (both sellers and buyers) what to look out for. There's really not much you can do though until you have it in your hand.
