3G phone not reading numbers from 2G sim

My GF just got a new company phone. It is a 3G phone, though she did not get a 3G SIM - just put the old one in (I presume a new SIM is to follow, would thant be normal?).

The trouble is her contacts are not readable from the SIM. Take the SIM out, put in any phone and they are there, put in the 3G phone and they are not.

    Both phones are Vodafone.

How can I get these across for her?

Back them up on to a pc and transfer that way.....

    Most 3G phones won't recognise a 2G sim

all 3G phones will accept 2G sims. what phone is it? you might need to copy the numbers via the new phone from the sim to the contacts section/area on the phone.

Thanks for the suggestion Jam Man, but don't have the equipment to do that.

I did try putting the 2G card into another Vodafone 2G phone with Bluetooth to try to transfer them that way, but weirdly, while each phone recognises and works with other bluetooth devices, they could not 'find' each other despite several attempts.

Your Nokia 6680 device can automatically switch
between the GSM and UMTS networks. The GSM network
is indicated with in the standby mode. The UMTS
    network is indicated with .
Network mode (shown ony if supported by the
operator)—Select which network to use. If you select Dual
mode, the phone uses the GSM or UMTS network
automatically, according to the network parameters and
the roaming agreements between the network operators.
Contact your network operator for more details.

Go into those settings and pick GSM. That will turn off the 3G mode.

    then;

To copy names and numbers from a SIM card to your
phone, press , and select Contacts > Options > SIM
contacts > SIM directory. Select the names you want
to copy and Options > Copy to Contacts.
