Fairly straightforward - urine test, eye test and general physical - heart, lungs, weight etc.

The 'average' person should have nothing to worry about unless you are hoping to be an astronaut or something like that. :D

If the OP is an older male the glove may come out :( to check for prostate cancer.

I know it's regularly done by GPs on older men during a routine physical but I'm not certain if it would be included in a job medical. On average most of these clients would probably be younger people.

It would really depend on the job or employer. I've had one that consisted of a simple questionnaire that I had to go through with the company's doctor to ensure that I was fit to work there. Converesely I've had another that included a lengthy questionnaire, a full physical, a fairly comprehensive set of blood tests and some spirometery. The latter was done as part of an employee health monitoring programme and was not a pre-requisite for starting the job.

Why in the name of god would the employer have an employee checked for prostate cancer?

Now I know I'll have balls of paper thrown at me for the stupidity of the above question, but honestly it seems a bit wierd.

Hmm... would an employer be likely to employ someone who is going to be absent on sick leave ?

    insert balls of paper

Well, if the guy has prostate cancer, he's not exactly going to be able to do his job....

I know I know, (see balls of paper reference) it just seems a bit wierd to me. Thank god I don't need an employment medical.

I wouldn't think a cancer check is normal for a job. Any medical I had didn't do it. Maybe later in life they would.

As a matter of interest, what are the main occupations where a medical is needed? I've never had to have one...

Off the top of my head, Aviation, civil service, (defence forces, police) some semi states.

Aviation I can understand (will need to get one once I actually start going somwhere towards my PPL), defence forces and police ok, civil service? As in clerical? I can understand a standard "Any medical problems?" questionaire in that case but a full medical would be a bit much.

If you are going to give someone a job for life and a pension, you kinda want to make sure they don't have a serious illness. Especially if you hired them, you'll be blamed.

Ah, often find myself asking if there actually is such thing as a job for life any more.

If you spend a lot of time talking to yourself then I'd say no.

Yes, I really must get a job with a psychological assesment included in the medical :)

AFAIK it is a prerequisite for all Government and semi-state permanent positions. It is not required for a temporary position even though one could be temporary for years. It's probably linked to having a pensionable (ie permanent) position. A temporary employee is much easier to dismiss in the event of frequent sick leave.

I remember in my college days I took a short term job(it was only for 3 weeks) but we had a comprehensive health check.
Hearing,Spirometry, bloods and the good old,"Can you cough please".
It was in a noisy manufacturing environment though.
The Spirometry test is good, nurse told me its good for your lungs.Always makes me cough when I do it though.

A medical for a job you'd only be in for 3 weeks? Now *that* is a bit much methinks.

    Wexcan,
I think they wanted to ensure that they were not too blame for any hearing damage or other claims. The place manufactured slates so god knows what kind of dust was about
