    hey.

in march, i want to host a 16 player lan of halo 2 and other games...

    what do i need?

    we have so far...

    4 xbox's
    4 t.v's ( 42", 32", 32" and 28" )
    4 copy's of halo 2
    4 copies of unreal tournament
and a few other games etc...
    16 controller's
    4 ethernet cross over cable's
and a belkin wireless router with 4 ethernet ports.

will the router work? or do we need an ethernet switch?
    or just a different router?

    any ideas would help!

p.s, the lan is on the 18th and 19th of march.
if anyone would be down around clonmel in tipp about then give me a shout if ur interested in coming down...

Crossover cables are used to hook two machines together without requiring a router but since you are using a router to link them up then strictly speaking you should use straight-through cables (generally called 'patch' leads) instead of crossover cables. However, most modern routers and switches will work with both but you really should test it first as the Belkins are low-budget products and might not support that feature. Make sure you test all of the ports on the router as sometimes only one port will be set up to use both crossover and patch leads.

Just so you know, the 8 wires in an ethernet cable are crossed over at opposite ends in a crossover cable and are in the same order at both ends in a patch lead.

The router will work fine with crossover cables.

Have you got one? I tried the belkin website but I couldnt find out whether it autosenses the cable type.

As for Halo2 LANs here's a gimmicky-but-fun gametype to help diffuse some tension after a good battle (you'll have to set this up from the main menu not the system link menu):

    Map: Lockout
    Mode: King of the hill
    Moving hill: off
    starting weapon: plasma pistol
    weapons on map: plasma pistol
    Shields: off
    Grenades: off

It sounds terrible but give it a go. It usually takes people a few minutes to realise that it's practically impossible to kill someone with a plasma pistol even if they have no shields (the plasma pistol is designed to take down shields not to provide the final blow) so the only alternative is to melee attack the feckers. The king of the hill mode draws everyone into the centre of the map so it becomes a boxing ring of death...for added fun try rolling the exploding barrels into the centre and see how many people you can take out with it at once.

    Anyone else got ideas?

    Map: Coagulation
    Mode: Slayer
    starting weapon:Brute Shot
    weapons on map: Brute Shots
    Shields: On
    Grenades: off

This game is called ROMAN WARS, whoever has LIVE proobly has played it. Basically one person/team goes to one base and one goes to the other. you fire your brute shots at each other ( its supprising how direct they hit you) . Then when everyone has no ammo, you meet in the middle and finish each other off with mellee attacks! Its legend!

Sounds homosexual tbh. Just play lockout/santuary slayer pro.

For "fun" the KOTH idea sounds good for n0obs, but my idea of fun is slayer pro or no scopes-(with elites though) :D

Make sure each box has the same version of the game. i.e. if any of them have been on xbox live, make sure all the other xboxes have the same updates. Otherwise it won't work. Had this problem before with Rainbow6

Yeah, the Rb6 thing was a pain in the ass, you could set up an ftp server with unleash and transfer the patch (the entire rainbow six save file, from the xbox thats patched) to all the other xboxs, or just delete the r6 save from the xboxs that are patched.

all systems are 1.1 i think. after the update map pack.
as for those type of games, i wrote them down but ive played a load like it already.
the plasma pistol 1 was fun but got annoying in the end...

as for the router and cross over cable's, i decided to test it. so i got all the 4 xbox's and cable's and tried it.
worked fine except on 1 machine which needed a regular ethernet cable. not sure why...
