Moved from Eircom over to BT's Flat rate Anytime and my @eircom.net addy is still working (receiving mail but not sending) but I'm getting this message when I go to send an email from the @eircom.net account it shows up and won't send. My gmail is loading and sending fine from Outlook express. Is there any way of fixing it i wonder??

    Thanks in advance.

you're still using eircom's smtp server. But since ur connecting to it from a non eircom ip address they are blocking access. Change your smtp server to the bt one and it will work.

mail.iol.ie is the SMTP server you should be using.

BT also gave me this mail.iol.ie via online technical chat support, They were critical of boards in general though, when I gave him the link for my problem, apparently they don’t like the criticism they get from boards! I put the new SMTP server in here although this more looks like the place for any adjustments.

I tried that WizZard and all I got was this pop-up response. It has me stumped anyway! I know that I should be able to route the @eircom.net email account through the BT Internet system, (at least I was told so anyway!) The account is live as I received email through it a few Min's ago It is just that I can't reply is all. I gave Eircom orders to keep the email alive and not to cancel it when I gave them cancellation order for Eircom Flat-rate 25.

    Any ideas

    lol Khannie,

I had a run-in with them today as they didn't want to enable my flat-rate dial-up account until next Monday  I was left high and dry as I had Eircom cancelled. A bit of advice if ever joining BT allow a week between the date they tell you and and the actual connection time. I was inches away from cancelling and that was what made them fastrack it.

    Anyway for the email.

I entered the SMTP in the wrong place last time round. I did it this way now but am getting this response when I go to send an email,

what am i doing wrong to say it is not working???

Hmm it looks like you have it correct, maybe tick the box "My Server Requires Authentication". I remember having to do that at one stage, just a suggestion.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

yea thats the correct way of entering smtp info.

try the ticking my server requires authentication and make sure u set your username to your bt username and password and not the eircom one.

Another problem could be a firewall blocking access to port 25 on mail.iol.ie. You could trying telnetting to mail.iol.ie 25 if the first method fails.

This is the most annoying thing ever! I got on the phone to BT and they recommend I turn off my Firewall which i did and it worked but i'm not leaving it turend off. There has to be some workaround, I really need that email account as it is the only ISP Internet one I have and I use it for booking rail-tickets and for ebay. Is thunderbird any better than this sh1te from Microsoft? I am now getting this when I go to send an email on my eircom account. Recieving seems to be okay as does sneding and recieving on my Gmail-pop account.

    What firewall are you using?

I'm on the regular windows (crap) firewall. I downloaded Thunderbird and can't really make head nor tail of it yet. This is the final straw with me and Microsoft, what a bunch of W*nkers, you can't even switch your ISP without having all this trouble, roll on Macintosh and next year. Any one really who buys them should either have A, a degree in advanced computing say 20yrs in Harvard or B. Have a CAT scan if lacking part A. Outlook express has now become so kind as to cut off my dial-up everytime I go into it    I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft, I hate Microsoft. Need I go on.

That's cos u've set it to hangup when it's finished sending and recieving. You can see that in the last screenshot you posted. So not MS to blame there but u. :p

Open port 25 on your firewall and see if that works.

Lol my mistake, I had visions of knuckle dusting bill gates!

is port 25 a TCP or UDP variety?

    Tcp

What is that and how does it work.

I'm throwing in the towel and have bookmarked the crappy eircom online mail retrival system. This is the first time a computer has beaten me for over 4yrs :(

For Fu€K sake stay with them and upgrade to the Flat Rate 150

I've used 'Flatrate 150 Anytime' since it came out and must agree .... for dial up it's great :p

telnet is typically used to provide user oriented command line login sessions between hosts on the Internet. So what you'd be doing is trying to connect to the host mail.iol.ie through port 25. This is the same thing that Outlook does when you try to send a mail.

If telnetting to the server does not work then obviously something is preventing the connection, and the problem is not limited to outlook.

    1. So open a command prompt (Start->run->cmd).
    2. Type "telnet mail.iol.ie 25" (without the quotes)
    3. It should then connect to server and you'll see something like: 220 ESTMP DATE TIME Ok+. If it fails you'll get an error message.

Thanks for that irlrobins, You were really helpful to me this evening. I know now what is wrong. Get this "telnet mail1.eircom.net 25" works fine giving me this result 220 mail12.svc.cra.dublin.eircom.net ESMTP I have come to the conclusion that nothing on my machine is block port 25 and that BT are punishing me for complaining (with venom) on the phone today, They are the only explanation I can come up with. Port 25 is open for Eircom not IOL, They obviously are blocking it, or else the account is not set-up 100% yet. I spoke with military precision down the line to them today as they lied and had told me the account would be running yesterday and then they gives me a cock and bull story of next Monday! I am edging my tongue for a conversation with them tomorrow. They obviously took a worse set in me when i foolishly gave the online help chat guy the link for this thread a few hrs back to enlighten him to what I meant.

Watch out for fireworks. It has to be them is responsible!

Well if you can access eircom on port 25 then yea nothing is blocking port 25. Try again tomorrow and see.

And if you're nice on phone it gets u further than being rude. Trust me, I used to do tech support for an ISP....

Suppose I'd better help out the locals :D
Forget about ports, firewalls or any of that cr@p. The long and the short of your problem is that due to some protocol restrictions you must be on the same domain as a SMTP(sendmail) server to use it. That is why when you were trying to use Eircom's sendmail server it wouldn't let you use it. The solution is simple. Just use EsatBT/IOL's sendmail server instead. I know it doesn't sound like it will work but trust me that is the solution. (So in effect your mail account will still be receiving mail from Eircom's POP3(incoming) server and sending out mail using EsatBT's SMTP (outgoing) server because that is the SMTP server with which you now share a domain)
I see you are using Outlook Express, I captured a few images from a 'pretend' email setup to guide you along. I have drawn a red ring around the bits you need to type. Type it in as I have done but obviously you should replace wherever I put "netwhizkid" with your own name/email account/password). Make no other changes, and that should be all you need to make your Eircom mail account usable again. If you have messed with the ports and things in your current mail account, it may be easier to just delete those settings and start from scratch like below. That way at least we can be sure that that the port settings are default as they should be. Good luck with it.

Yea that's what I told him from the start and he's put in the correct BT/IOL smtp server. Just for some reason he is unable to connect to it.

But thanks for reinventing the wheel! :p

    Hi fellas,

Just got off the phone with BT, there was no need for fireworks it was my own fault all along

It turns out that my Skydsl (one -way satellite broadband) is causing the blockage of outgoing emails why ever I don't know!

When I turn it off it my @eircom.net sends them mine through the mail.iol.ie SMTP fine! Telenet is working fine with Skydsl switched off.

It had the BT guy and all office stumped, He said they don't block port 25 only for true spammers. I was on the right track though had it been blocked.

Obviously Skydsl isn't taking too well to my new BT anytime setup but is working fine up until this little hiccup. Would these settings mean anything to anybody in the know?

I keep getting this error message while trying to send a email with Skydsl switched on. Skydsl is not affecting GMAIL at all as that uses port 465 for SMTP.

Anyway as I kinda am the authority on Skydsl around here, It looks like if I don't know, who will? :o Have a look at the settings screenshot to see if anything can be made from it. Otherwise I will re-install the software and if that don't work Skydsl Technical support will have to be emailed.

Thanks for all the help anyway so far, I'd say I had the best minds in the business just simply sheer stumped there for a bit!

err.., yeah I know that but I was just trying to be a bit more graphical in case he was putting something in the wrong place, no harm in trying to help a fellow Kerry boardsie, is there?
Anyway, you should have mentioned sooner that you were using one way satellite, Netwhizkid, I took it when you said about the flat rate that you were only on dialup. The Skydsl thing is another kettle of fish.
