    Hey,

What would you guys recommend for a total beginner, in terms of what type of ma to start with and what clubs would suit someone like me? I live about ten mins from the future site of SBG Harolds cross[well Tallaght as it will be i presume] but would that be a bit too professional or worth checkin out?

    Thanks very much

I don't think any martial art would be better for a "complete beginner" than another. Well perhaps a full contact sparring based martial art would be something you should be cautious about getting involved in (boxing, kickboxing, muay thai). But usually the coaches involved are very capable and look after you well.

But seeing that you live in tallaght I recommed you join COlm O Reilly in firhouse, info here http://www.twokingsmma.net/.

This club is a MMA club, and in my experience with a strong emphasis on the ground work (think submission wrestling and BJJ etc). I can personally vouch for the club being beginner friendly and colm will welcome new people down to every class no questions asked. Give it a shot.

hey thats our job!! seriously though i've got guys in their +40s who've never trained in the beginners program. everyBODY works to their own ability. colm's club would be the same, sure drop down to his place and watch them in action:)

Thanks for the kind words guys.

riddik, when you start any activity your body won't be accustomed to it and you'll feel really out of shape. For example, a middle distance runner could run quite comfortably nearly all day. Put them in a similir duration swim, or a wrestling match, and they'll gas quite quickly. This is down to different requirements for each activity, and your muscles fatigue rapidly since they're not used to that strain put on them. Keep at any activity and two things start to happen. 1) you become more efficient, and spend a lot less energy on the same activity. 2) your sport specific fitness improves, and you're able to train much longer.

I guess this is really a long winded way of saying that to get fit at a certain sport/MA, you have to do it! Don't worry about fitness, neither myself or JK are going to whip you for taking a breather during training!

    Colm

Hi, Im interested in taking this up, 2 questions really, i'm a four eyes who cant see past his nose with no glasses on, so whats the rule/problems I'll face in that regard and secondly what's the damage?

I wear contact lenses, no problem. In my experience, if you get a bang in the eye area, or some pressure while rolling, they'll pop out. This is a chore. But generally not dangerous.

    Important note: Soft lenses only.
