How do tournaments work at all?

    What does the below mean.

Do I buy in for 25 with a 3 euro big blind? If so blinds are a big portion of the overall stake.

    Thanks

    MM

    Wednesday 9pm Starting Stack 2000
    €25 + €3 No Limit Hold’Em Three €20 Re-buy’s And A Top-Up
    With "TERMINATOR" Buttons**

the 3 euro is a registration fee. this goes to the tournie organisers usually to cover their expenses (and make them a profit). the 25 should all go in to the total prize pool. the blinds will be set relative to your starting stack (in this case 2000), they'll proably start at something like 10/20 then progress from there at timed intervals. i suggest you read the beginners sticky near the top of the page. a lot of the basics are dealt with there :)

In a tournament you get some amount of chips, which have no cash value. For example here you will get 2000 chips for your €28. These are only play money to keep track of how you are doing, and the tournament will keep going until one person accumulates all the chips. The blinds start at a fairly small level like 25-50 and increase at regular intervals.

From the €28 you pay, €25 goes into the prize fund, or less if the organisers like to rip people off. The "terminator buttons" probably mean you get a bonus for knocking people out, they're a fun extra.

The tournament structure quoted means that you pay €25 to enter the tournament, €3 to pay for the registration (to be paid with the initial entry fee), and you are allowed to rebuy 3 times during the specified rebuy period for €20 each time only after you lose all you , and at the end of the rebuy period you can top, which will cost you €20.

The blind structure is totally seperate, and will be denominated by chips which will represent what you get for your entry. They will probably not have a correlation to the entry fee paid i.e. 25 entry does not give 25 tournament chips. 1000 initial chips are more likely. The 'Terminator' chip (known as a scalp also) is gained by you when you knock another player out of the tournament, and you lose yours when you are knocked out. Each one you accumulate above your own is worth €5.

Thanks very much I apologise if this is covered in the sticky. I looked there and couldn't find it.

Just one question on the blinds. These go up from 10-20 to say 200,000
WTF are there millions at stake in these games?

    Thanks

If you get 1000 chips initially, and say 1000,1500,2000,3000 for rebuys topups, and there are 50 players in the game then there are potentially 425000 chips in play. Blinds go up at regular intervals, and depending on the number of chips in play can go to quite a high level in order to end the tournament at a civilised time (and not go on for 4 days in a sh1tty tournament), as opposed to not raising the blinds at all.

The chips have no cash value, it's like having a million matchsticks at stake. You win money by being the player left with all the matchsticks, but you don't win a million euro for it.
