Has anyone got one of these, and is there any games that it can't handel at max setting on everything?

    Can't decide between a 7800GT, 6800GT or a Radeon x850XT.

In reviews, the X850XT seems to beat the 6800GT in lots of the tests, like the VGA Charts on tomshardware.com, the X850XT leaves it for dead in most tests. Is this true, and should i invest?

    Thanks

7800 GT is a newer generation from the X850XL.

to answer about all games on high everything - i've 7800GT and it cant handle high everything on fear - switch soft shadows off and it can but not with soft shadows on. the X850XL is a good card but the 7800GT is a better one.

yeah but is it worth 120 euro price difference? I will only play 1024x768x32 with 4x AA and 8X AF

if you want any sort of future proofing at all i'd go for the highest one you can afford.

All the whistles and bells features are handled better by the newer cards - i for one am a major fan of volumetric lighting and some of the nicer effects.

I might go with the 6800GT. thats still a bit of a monster isn't it? And i i can get it for 270euro delivered.

    I wouldn't buy a 6800GT.

I have one and I'm happy enough with it, but I don't think you'd be happy with it for playing 1024x768 4AA 8AF. The X800XT beats it by a nice bit in DirectX games and the X850XT gives it a thrashing. OpenGL games are a different story though, as far as I know.

If I were you I'd save up for the 7800GT, and have it able to last for a while.

There's no such card as a X850XL -there's a X800XL or a X850XT, the latter is probably the best card left on AGP but it's still hugely expensive.

A X1600XT is another possibilty to throw into the ring if its a PCI-e card you're after.

Ok i ended up buying a 7800GT Extreme Edition (450/1050)

I don't know who makes it though!!!

If you look here where i bought it, it says it's called this "256MB ScanFX PCI-E *Extreme Edition* GF7800GT *450 Core 1.05Ghz Mem* (256bit) ViVo 2xDVI"
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=273363

And i found something on OcUK that looks the same as it cand it's called something different! Who makes it??

That'll do perfectly - nice fast core overclocked out of the box. You'll be set for a good while with that card.

Looking at the one your bought it looks like ScanFX are the rebranders. It shouldn't matter too much if you look after it.

Ye i got it from Scan.co.uk = ScanFX?

Anyway. It looks very similar to the Asus Model. Should i be able to overclock it higher?

with better cooling yes - you can flash the bios to up the voltage and then overclock it with coolbits.

Thats what I did and went from 425 to 485 core speed. You'll be needing a better VGA cooler tho. She runs hot hot hot with the voltage at 1.5 - let me tell you. FEAR had mine at 70 degrees in some places - had to stop playing and let it cool down! :v:

wow. can you suggest any new coolers?

I think the RAM gives you a bigger speed boost them the core.
I used to overclock my Elsa Gladiac Gefore2 GTS like crazy, and found that overclocking the core by 15% only yeilded the same type of performance increase as upping the memory by about 40Mhz

You would have to think that they are badly designed eh! needing huge coolers to keep them cool (cool as in being hot to the touch)...

My 3000+ 64bit amd runs with the fan off until i start doing serious gaming.

Ideally I'd like to watercool my whole system but the extra cost and the time/patience required stopped me.

I use the zalman VF700-Cu on my card and its not working good enough because the card is so hot - I hear the arctic vga coolers do a good job but I think my prob is case airflow - because the vga cooler faces down and blows up on the card I think the hot air is getting trapped and being recycled onto the card so I've stencilled out a hole in my case for an additional intake to provide air in below the card and drive the hot air up into the main airflow across the centre of the case.

I'll be an engineer by the time I'm finished. :v:
