From April 1st SBG Ireland will be moving from Harold’s Cross to Tallaght Business Park. Tallaght Business Park is located off the Tallaght By-Pass (N81) 1 mile from Tallaght Village and approximately 6 miles South West of Dublin City Centre and 2 miles from the M50 Motorway. The following buses leave you within 5-15mins walk 49A, 50, 54A, 56A, 65, 65B, 75, 76A, 77, 77X, 201, 202 and also the LUAS.

    b5041f34.jpg

SBG Ireland will occupy the ground and first floor of a brand new 4000sq ft building. The ground floor will have

    • 1500sq ft of matted training area - like Harold’s Cross it will be floating on top of 6 tonnes of shredded tires making it one of the safest training areas in the world.
    • A hybrid boxing ring/cage – the first of its kind! This will be a one-off custom made ring with half ropes and half solid matted wall with 45° angles like an Octagon to simulate a cage wall for takedowns and MMA training.
    • Multiple bag training stations
    • Reception/relaxation area which will include large screen (53"!), dvd/video player for watching fights and a PS2 for fun:)
    • Pro shop selling fight-wear and nutritional supplements.

    The first floor will have

    • Cardio training area including threadmill, Concept II rower, stepper, bike to start with.
    • Strength training equipment including Smith machine power rack for non-assisted heavy squat, bench etc lifting. Set of dumbbells and adjustable column stack.
    • Adjustable benches for free weights and also one for the Smith Machine for different Bench Press techniques.
    • Olympic power lifting platform to perform Cleans, Jerks and other Olympic lifts which have become the core strength training routines for the World’s top athletes. There will be a number of certified Power Lifting Coaches in the gym to assist people wanting to increase their strength using these lifts.
    • Core development equipment including wobble boards, stability balls, medicine balls, dyna band training.
    • Also on the first floor will be the Men and Women’s changing room. The Men’s room will have 3 showers and the women’s will have 1.
    • Separate men and women’s toilets.

    Thai Boxing arrives at SBG!

After a couple of false starts I am also very pleased to announce that we will have a full time Thai Boxing coach, Paddy Clint, teaching regular classes. Thai boxing is the delivery system of choice for the World’s top MMA fighters and now you will be able to learn this highly effective striking art ‘in-house’.

    Longer Opening Hours

The gym will now be open for longer too - for you to come down and workout in the gym, train on the bags, spar in the ring or on the mat whenever suits you

    Sounds good

As a matter of interest, how big is the current matted area in Harold's X?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,639 ✭✭✭john kavanagh

    about 1200sq ft

actually in the new place there will be 1 matted area 1500sq ft and a second one about 700sq ft

thanks for the nice words guys, its a big risk but i think (hope!) it'll work:)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,759 ✭✭✭✭dlofnep

I've no doubt it will be a success. It's a shame we don't have those facilities outside dublin, but I guess thats what you get for living in the big city. I'm sure with the influx of mma fans over the last year, if you advertise it right John, you won't have any problems.. I don't think you will anyways.

Just so you know, it won't be called SBG Harold's Cross once the gym moves, just thought I'd clear that up.:D

As a native Tallafornian, I'll give you a break down of bus routes and how far you'll have to walk.

The 49A is a phantom, and doesn't really exist. The 49 will drop you at the Square, as will a plethora of other busses. Then it's about a 10min walk to the gym. The Luas will be about a twelve minute walk.

Busses that will leave you slightly closer(on the Tallaght Bypass - about 6 minutes) include the 77, 65, 65B, 76A, 201, and 202.

To further help you guys with your bearings, if any of you know of the failed football stadium in Tallaght, it's across the road from that, and behind the Fruitfield (formerly Nestle) Building.

Now all we need is a celebrity to help out on the opening day, maybe Stallone or Snipes...

thanks for clearing up directions colm - for some reason my map came out postage stamp size!

hmmm i wonder could i get chuck norris to come over and roundhouse a bottle of champagne or two:D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

No worries coach. Just think abou this though, a Chuck Norris v Mr. T match up in the brand new ring/octagon.

Of course, I doubt that match could go ahead due to safety reasons*

    mr-t.gif VS grand-master-chuck-norris-bn.jpg

*safety reasons being the match up would be so awesome it could destroy the universe!

I ll drop in to get choked out again, next time I come home to visit! LOL ! ;-)

Paddy will do a great job teaching, he's a great coach for Thai.

Thanks john for having me along..

Some serious thai training starting up in new gym once the pads and all arrice from thailand, starting off 3 times a week, and maybe more in the future depending on time and demand..

It will be a super venue to train in, loads of room, padded floors, a ring, weights, cardio, showers.... everything you need for quality MMA/Thai training

probably the first fully functional gym of its type in ireland, there be a web site coming along soon and a gym name and all that sort of stuff.

    thanks paddy

you can almost trace the "ages of Irish MMA" in the various phases and developments FullCircle/The Dogs/SBG has gone through over the last few years.

And here really is the begining of Full on professional MMA. I know that with coaches of this calibre and a venue like this Ireland is really going to become a key international player in MMA.

So thanks alot JK, and everyone else who has helped push Irish MMA (kicking and screaming sometimes) onto the world stage!

    Good luck with this Kav!!!

    Peace

Over the last 3 or 4 years, it really has come on in a big way. I agree.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭MaxBax

This sounds like a cool gym, pity it's in tallaght. What's going to happen to the current place? Selling up? Maybe o'reilly can take it over.

fianna.5u.com i dunno, i think you're being a bit optismistic. but what the hell do i know? GO TEAM IRELAND MMA.

    JK/MMA + PC/MT= Very Dangerous Fighters!!!

Fair play John great stuff, I wouldnt worry about the risk you have a proven track record as a fighter and a coach as does Paddy, no doubt it will be a roaring success, the loyal student base you have built up will make sure of that!! Once again Congrads!!

All those new facilities sound great. The prospect of a having a shower after training, and changing in an actual locker room ... luxurious stuff :D

I'm sure the classes in Thai will get a lot of attendance, and the strength-training facilities sound good too. I've never done any weight training whatsoever, its something I'd be interested in learning about properly.

Tallaght is a bit further away for some people (me included), but ultimately I think if you really want to train then some extra travel time won't make a difference. There's also the possibility that the new location will attract members who would not necessarily have wanted to travel into Harold's Cross, so it might balance out.

Anyway, best of luck to everyone involved.

think of it like this for the first time in Ireland you have trainers that know their **** inside out teaching it.. It wont be jk trying to teach stand up it will be me... and it wont be me teaching BJJ it will be jk, so you have a trainer purely for that aspect of the fight game....

added to that a ring, bags , weights, running machine etc etc etc... well i think its worth the 25 mins on the LUAS... dont you....

Damn straight it would be worth it. If I lived in an corner of dublin I'd make the trip. Actually, I want to cry now.

And Let's not Forget Zhifco teaching Freestyle Wrestling!
3 professional coaches teaching the three ranges of MMA. I know it'll be a roaring success, and I don't think it's being optimistic to predict Ireland becoming an international force in MMA either. We've already got a lots of talent in this country who have competed and won on the international stage, and the sport is still very much developing both in Ireland and Worldwide. I'm proud that Ireland will have top class facilities like this and hopefully more like it in the future, given the lack of many kinds of pro sporting facilities in this country, people who get to train at the new SBG HQ should feel very lucky!

    Best of Luck Kav

    Ciarán.

Makes me wish I was a southside boy!

Obviously best of Luck, but for anyone who isn't aware of the calibre of the coaches.

JK, is THE MMA coach in Ireland. Tonnes of stuff on this forum about him. Like I said before, I aint ready to fight if I havent moved with him. Always looking to develop his guy's games.

Paddy, I trained with paddy a couple of times ages ago in the old SBG and I am still working on and using the stuff he showed me then! Great guy and an amazing stand-up / MT coach!

Zhivko, I have never had the "mentor" type coach as long as I have been doing MMA, well, until I started training with Zhivko. His Clinch is obviously throught the roof. And no other training makes me feel as ready for a fight as it does with Zhivko.

Basically I cant wait to be finished with college, shake of the shakels of education and start training again!

    Peace

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 863 ✭✭✭Mikel

Who is Zhivco? What does he teach? Why is it "through the roof"? (serious question)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,577 ✭✭✭Colm_OReilly

Zhifco is, quite simply, Ireland's top Olympic Wrestler. Since he's from Eastern Europe and an athlete through and through he just doesn't comprehend slacking off and not workin 100% 100% of the time, so he forces his athletes in his class to do likewise just by example.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 620 ✭✭✭MaxBax

some kind of wrestler, from bulgaria, once ranked no8 in the world.

In my experience, very nice fellow, very good teacher. Very good wrestling coach.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,398 ✭✭✭columok

    Fianna,

What do you mean a "mentor" type coach?

    Colum

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 161 ✭✭fianna.5u.com

basically with Zhivko you really feel like you have to do more, if not for yourself, for him. Its like Zen said you just give %100 %100 of the time. He's been doing what he does since he was a child and is "wise" in that discipline.

Also anyone who has seen him will be amazed to know that he competes at 65kgs at Irish and UK level and at an astonishing -60kgs for international tourneys.

    Peace

    Hi John,

Congrats on the new gym it sounds amazing !!!

Best of luck to you & Paddy & the rest of the SBG gang, I'm sure the new facilities & coaching setup is going to lead to a lot more quality MMA fighters in Ireland. Which I look forward to seeing.

Hope it's a huge success for you !!!! (Which I'm sure it will be)

A clash of the titans event, to once & for all decide which range is Best !!!

The instructors for all 3 ranges JK, Zhifco & Paddy all enter the Cage & the fights not over til one man left standing alone over his defeated opponents.:D

Only kidding guys but who else would love to see an Open weight class MMA tournament of just the the SBG & ATG instructors against each other !!!
    Imagine :
JK / Andy Ryan / Colm O'Reily / Paddy Clint / Zhifco etc all on the one fight card.

    I'd pay to see that.

Who'd you put your money on ?

Thats 9.5 stone! what size is this guy?
I have seen some wrestling while in US, it was only high school, 15-16 yrs, but those guys were monsters!
Actually, there was a feature on Rte recently on a sports programme about east european wrestlers in ireland, showed a russian guy i think. An Irish guy gave him a run for his money, but he looked twice his size!

Well, in a MMA competition you'd have to go with most MMA experience. --> JK. But AR has a size advantage, but JK has better BJJ skillz so it goes JK way again.

But you can neve rule out a knockout punch/kick/knee/elbow from PC.

So just to give the silly q. a silly answer, I'd go with Zhifco - KO by slam!

I'd put my money on Zen. He'd have some Whacky Races way of winning whe no one was watching.
