At the moment everytime i turn on my laptop it goes back to a last known good state or what seems to be default settings. this means that all my sound, display and anything i save on my desktop dissapears. Any suggestions? p.s turning off restore point has been tried.

is it a work laptop....maybe a mandatory profile??

in the root of your profile directory check if your "NTUSER" file has a "dat" or a "man" extension....you'll need admin rights to change it methinks...

ntuser.dat = changes you make will stick
ntuser.man = settings revert back to what they were when the profile was made mandatory

it seems to be crashing on shutdown, so when it boots up its asking to reset to the old reg settings.

Might need a complete format and reinstall to fix. Have u updated winxp to latest service pack/patches? and have you tried updating all the drivers on the system?
