Sorry if this has been posted before, but I'm wondering on some advice I've heard around.
A few people have mentioned to me how you should always eat after a workout, (within 90mins). Personally I find this really hard as I just feel really uncomfortable, and I am wondering if there is any real benifit to this? Or really I should say would I be doing any harm by just waiting until Im hungry!

    Thanks for the replies!

    :D

I'm not an expert, but what I'm taking now is litre water, protein shake and a banana. Sometimes I'll throw in a chicken sambo as well it its within meal time. I don't need to know the specifics on why its a good idea, all advice i've been told is that its a no brainer.

Obviously when you are training your body is usign stored glycogen or blood glycogen ( i.e either body fat or recently digested carbs ) as energy, it is also using amino acids, creatine, glutamine and a million other things to keep you going.

As we all know you grow AFTER you workout, when you can rest and eat, so it is vital that you replace what has been lost asap. After a workout i suggest some creatine ( 5 grams ) with some carbs ( i go for liga, many people go for glucose ) and some protein ( 25 to 40 grams )

About an hour after this i then have a feed of round steak, mushrooms and broccoli.

    Hey zabbo,

just as an add-on to dragan's post, the specific reason why you should be taking in these nutrients asap is generally attributed to the hormone insulin. Insulin levels elevate during high intesity activity and remain somewhat higher than normal for a while afterwards. The effect of insulin is to 'open' the bodies cell membranes allowing easy uptake of nutrients from the blood - so immediately following a good workout is the perfect time to drive as many nutrients in there as possible. Protein obviously, for muscle growth and repair, and also simple carbs, both to replace the muscle glycogen and to maintain your elevated insulin levels for a while.

Because your body is in 'store' mode, people generally avoid taking in alot of fats immediately following exercise.

The need for this nutrient replenishment is driven by your own efforts so be honest with yourself - did you really do a serious gut-busting session or not? Personally, if I don't eat alot after a good session I pretty much burn a hole in my stomach.
