Nokia Car Kit 'Mod'

I bought a car a while ago that had a nokia kit (wired not bluetooth) already fitted and hooked up. I don't know the exact model but it has the 2.5mm audio jack with a power jack right beside it. The 2.5mm jack fits the handsfree socket on my xda perfectly, and I'm never going to own a nokia, so I ripped it apart to see if it would work with the XDA. It almost works perfectly, but it only activates if the outside of the power jack is touching off the XDA's body. This probably isn't doing any harm but at the same time I'd like some way of bypassing it so that I can rip the power jack off completely.

I'm hoping somebody has some experience of car kits and knows what you can or can't do with them in this regard ? I'm thinking of just cutting the wire going to it and putting in a switch instead, or would this cause a dangerous short ?
