Dodgy audio playback on laptop

    Hi all...

I'm looking at a laptop for a friend. Problem is, audio playback of mp3 files is not 100%. Every now and again the audio is very "breaky-uppy", kinda latent as if being played over a dodgy GSM connection in bad signal area.

The actual files are not distorted/clipping etc. I tried external PC speakers connected to line out and the same result. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the sound card, tried the files in both itunes and MPlayer 10. Same result.

Doing an ewido malware scan right now and it's found 83 infrected objects half way through. OS is XP Home SP2, AMD Athlon XP1800+ (500MHz), 256MB RAM, 1.5GB free space (Resources???) on an Acer Aspire 1300

Anyone got ideas or come across this prob before? Thanks.
