Ok, I'm having prolems with my PC crashing. I've spent a fortune on it and it's still not right, a guy on the saphire forum believes it's my psu 'LINK'

So he's saying this.. 'that PSU of yours = 20-22a on the 12v rail continuous nominal load. A 64bit system needs a MINIMUM of 25a nominal load - not MAX PEAK - to run a high end rig like that with a VGA card that needs its own power'

So if he is right has anyone got a suggestion for a good one to get and were to get it?? There's a load of them on ebay but none of them seem to have the 25a needed

I'd recommend buying a decent new PSU off some place like Komplett - it's definately not something you should be cutting costs on, especially with a system like that. I don't know what's good these days - I'm sure other people around here will recommend something.

Yeah I bought the one I have from Komplett only about a month ago...
But since then I have decided to stop shopping with Komplett until they improve their customer service and delivery...

I don't see how eBay's an improvement from Komplett O_o
Anyway I've never had problems with either them or GLS, but I've heard bad things about CoolerMaster's power supplies...

I've had problems with both, but have heard a lot of bad stuff that I don't want to happen to me!
I've bought a lot of stuff from ebay, if you research and contact the sellers you normally get a good feel for who they are, plus the prices are so much better

Crashing, unless its a driver / bug problem, gemerally indicates a PSU problem. You have a fairly hungry system. I have a system about the same and I went for a 680W PSU. Im not gonna use it, but I just want it to be safe / future proof. Perhaps you could get your hands on a more powerful PSU to try out and see if it fixes the problem. If not, it's prob a problem with some other part of your hardware. If you cant get it fixed, try dropping it in somewhere so they can test the components and tell you what is wrong. I would recommend www.marx-computers.ie , as they are in fairview, allow you to pick up / collect, and are fairly cheap. I just would not recommend you get componenets off them. Thats another discussion. Great place though. Best of luck. Regards, Mike

I bought a Hiper 580W modular psu from peats, of all places (http://www.peats.com/cgi-bin/shop/db.cgi?view=1&id=8842&type=6&sid=1298707x0), and it is doing great on my fairly heavily loaded athlon 64 system - it is powering all of these bits and bobs at the moment:

    Abit AN8
    Athlon 64 3200+ and hsf
    4 sticks of ddr ram
    3 IDE hard disks
    1 SATA hard disk
    1 dvd burner
    1 nvidia 6800GT
a couple of external usb devices
    2 case fans

My old Antec 400W just couldn't hack it ;)
I wouldn't normally buy from Peats but they have that psu at a decent price.

I used to buy from peats but my contact left:-(

The guy I was talking to on saphire (see link above) seems to really know his stuff and I think the hyper is enough but I want this psu to last more than a month!! I'm thinking future proofing.....

I think I found a Tagan on ebay, €90 plus post, waiting to hear back what the postage is.

    Thanks for the replies

Hmm.... PSU's the most important part of any build, so skimping is not recommended.
Unless your eBay seller can guarantee the Tagan's new (and has warranty on it, so you can send it back/RMA to manufacturer) get a new PSU.
Also, it was a bad experience with 1 PSU; I'm sure the next one will last you a whole lot longer ;)

Went with the Enermax Liberty 500w. €130 inc post on pixmania so hopefully it will do the job.
Will update when I have it.

    Thanks for all the replies
