Old headset on 360

Just realised I could use my old headset on the 360, but just wondeting what advantages there are on the new one, like volume control etc. and under the xbox 260 controller there's like the slot for the headset and two other small one's on either side, what are they for? cheers

to allow you to mute/increase volume, because if you use old headset, you wont be able to do this. (im sure you could adjust within the game though)
