Ok, this is not about a classic, but general motoring problems. My 2.2 turbo diesel camri (jap)started making a whirly noise, hard to explain exactly what it sounds like, anyway, my Mechanic was booked to strip it down on tuesday, he suspected it was a bearing somewhere, cam belt tensioner etc, he really didn't know. I gets this guy in my car tonight and he mentions he's in the trade. Whats this sound like to you , I say, giving the car a rev at the lights. That's the turbo, he said, used to drive saab turbo's and they were always going in them, keep an eye on the oil levels and you'll be fine for a while. Although I'm not happy that my turbo may be on the way out, I'm happy that I have an idea of what the problem is. Tuesday would have seen the car being stripped, cam belt and tensioners replaced (my mechanic won't put old ones back in, he says it's bad practice) and most likely a heap of other stuff done also.God knows at what cost. So I'll be checking a few other mechanics just to be sure of this lads diagnosis, I'm wondering if anyone here has experience of turbo's letting go, noises etc, is keeping the oil topped up enough or should it be changed immediatly.

If the turbo's on its way out I assume it will have to be replaced anyway, if not now then when it does go so changing it can't really do any harm

OT did I see you in town yesterday driving from the Halfpenny Bridge towards O'Connell Bridge? Red Mustang Coupe ZV reg

yep, it sounds like your turbo is about to quit. it happens on most of those jap imports regularly, dont bother topping up with oil, get it changed before it lets you down when you need it.got two troopers in last week had to be changed.
