id go and see how much dell charge for out of warranty repairs i suppose. you might try searching for a replacement drive online for it, if you have the model number, etc. you just might be able to replace it yourself.

Most laptops allow you to change the optical drives simply, you might be able to get a replacement on ebay.

Its not like most drives.. Its moulded into the case.. "most" drives just unscrew n pop out, i have 2 sitting here but they're of no use..

Same as the one below, u can kinda see the way the drive is part of the chassis.. I don't know why he wont just use an external drive...

You absolutely certain their is no means of removing the drive ?

Dell usually list the methods in the manual or on the online documentation in their support site for the make and model. I have a Dell laptop with very similar casing to that one in the photo same location for the DVD writer and all, you just take out a screw from underneath then push the metal edge and it pops out.

If you do find a method of removing the drive just buy one like the NEC ND-6650A and then swap the drives bezels their are catches underneath that will allow you to take it off (the drive needs to have its tray open for this so power on the laptop then press eject now power off and then remove the drive from the system) then just swap it with the one on the new drive if the new drives existing bezel doesn't line up right with the molding of the laptops case.

The model in question is a dell inspiron 6000 (if the picture is correct). It a very simple process to replace the drive. It is not hot swapable. Switch of the machine, turn it over, remove one screw underneath, the one holding the drive in, just go 5 inches from the edge of the cd rom drive.
Once this has been removed using a flat head screwdriver, edge out the faulty drive. You can replace it with another drive but the detailing on the side may not match up, so your options are get an exact replacement from dell or using the removed housing put in a new drive, the second option will require a small phillips screwdriver.

You will need to reuse the bracket on the rear to the drive, so keep this

The model you need is DW-Q58A

Im a little surprised that it needs replacement as dell inspirion 6000 are all less that 6 months old

    Still, i hope this helps
