Why not use some form of NAS connected to the wireless router? aren't netgear roviding a similar solution. But not exactly what you want as its a seperate piece of kit, its only a matter of time before someone cops on and puts storage on the gateway, although that may negate some security issues.

Still need to hook it to a modem, and it's a bit out of your price spec, but that won't be long coming down in price.

I'd love to see some sort of liquid gas cooling device for a CPU/GPU along the lines of water cooling, only, um...cooler...hell whilst we're on the subject, whatever happened to superconduction and microchips?

Seen somfin similiar after i posted but i would imagine what i want will be the norm one day just a little box under the stairs with 500gb/1tb storage. Security shouldnt be a problem if done right only WEP access to the router and storage facility. I thought of this as the kid is playing the DS online behind me and i just sent a new demo to my PS2s hd tru ethernet from the pc. So technically everything is there just needs to be put together into one box.

A decent reliable and refillable nitrogen cooler would be nice for Cpus. Something with little bottles you could refill at your local PC World :p

Dirt cheap second hand laptop with Broken screen.
    Wireless card in PCMCIA slot.
Get a IDE cable converter to go from 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch drive.
Power the 3.5" drive from an old PSU.

The laptop doesn't need USB and anyway your budget does not cover a USB 2.0 built in or a USB 2.0 external drive. PCMCIA to USB cards do exist but out of budget.

Or a NAS connected to a media converter. http://www.proxim.com/products/wifi/client/ec/

I want an internal ADSL modem - less messy with wires and power cables etc, it should also make a direct connection to the Internet instead of running throgh a network and gateway.

Would like an mpeg 1 & 2, DivX encoder/decoder that can:

    1. Work stand alone or connected to PC via USB or network connection
    2. Be hooked up to TV via component or HDMI
    3. Connect to an external hard disk via USB
    4. Can have EPG downloaded onto it.
    5. Be very quiet.
    6. Cheap. With no built in hard disk, it should be under €200.

Edit: Should also play HD content - 720p & 1080i (HD wmv would be a bonus)

Indeed I do, I have the 1000G version, the older one, it doesn't support USB connection, but this mo-fo does.

Pinnacle are a great company too. It's £179 Sterling, so a little more then €200 but well worth it. Especially for the intergrated Wireless

I'd love to see a DAP with the interface & usability of a Rio Karma, the build quality & battery life of an X5 and with a databasing file system that still connects as a Windows mass storage device. The latter requirement is extremely hard to implement in software, but would be incredibly cool...

Do motherboards have built in bluetooth/wifi yet?

    If not, I want that.

Also, Bluetooth speakers that you can recharge or something, just get rid of all these damn cables. :p

I think you can get Mother Boards with Wifi and Bluetooth, well if you can get them on Laptops it must be available.

I bought an MSI Socket A board with onboard blutooth about three years ago, so yea, it can be gotten alright.

Asus still have an onboard WiFi option on some of their boards too

ShowCenter 200 looks great from a playback point of view, but for encoding, I think you have to have a Pinnacle PCTV tuner card as well. As far as I can tell, this means your PC would have to be turned on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Yes, you're pc would have to be on. Most people have PVR's for recording, since the Showcentre doesn't have a drive in it. It's a Show centre..... not a record centre.

    Would'nt say no to a 17" laptop, Merom 2.33GHz CPU, dual nvidia go 7900's-512Mb, 10k 100 gig HD, 108Mbps wireless, bluetooth2.0, brushed aluminum finish, < 6.5lbs inc charger:D

i want a mobo with a socket for gpu, so instead of changing your graphics card u just change the gpu and also slots for graphics ram to change that too. Would be infinitly faster and better then having to buy a whole new card also can stick a decent hsf on it easier :D But im sure there is some downsides too

I would like some sort of USB dongle device that could act as a universal wireless hub for everything like keyboard, mouse, printer, pda, broadband, speakers even monitor. Monitor is probably unrealistic but most of the other stuff could be done, just think of the wire mess that could be freed

I second that wires on speakers make a mess of everything:mad:

A quantum computer powered by a perpetual motion machine.

you may as well ask for an abacus powered by a hamster in a running wheel.

    hmmmmm....

    Now you're talkin'.

My ultimate device is basically a psp with a touchscreen on it (mostly for use as a keyboard). PSP's are an amazingly powerful piece of kit (though I could always make use of more processing power).

Would love a PPU also, but I hear the aegia one might be little more than a 2nd GPU.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,810 ✭✭✭✭K.O.Kiki

    I know -- a combined GPU/PPU card!
And then it won't matter if it takes up 2 slots :D

Seriously, if PPU's get developed right, they'd be a great complimentary upgrade to older GPU's.
And it would be easier to help people with upgrades.
Random guy: "Want to upgrade graphics from *xxx*?"
First poster: "Get a PPU. Sorted."
Ahh, helping people is so much fun
