Anyone know of any good basic marketing books? I'm interested particularly in learning about marketing processes in general and not sales.
    Cheers

"Why We Buy" By Paco Underhill is one of the best and most interesting books I've come accross in marketing area. It covers everything from sales, to marketing but from marketing standpoint alone its worth the read..
Full of interesting points and quirky facts..

Anything Seth Godin writes is worth reading. Some of his books can be downloaded free and legally from his site http://www.sethgodin.com

The two people that I like are Dan Kennedy and Alan Forrest Smith.

Alan is going to be at Think And Get Rich Bootcamp, at the RDS in February. Check it out - http://www.ThinkAndGetRichBootcamp.com

Can anyone recommend a book for marketing and communications handy for a student starting off on the subject?

Even a revision type of book perhaps?

    Thanks

Good IMC text is Advertising and Promotion: An Integrated Marketing Communications Perspective, Belch & Belch, 2008. Not light reading though, and takes a largely american stance but covers the basics well.

Yes, Kotler is the standard text but a little dull. It is on all the college courses as the key marketing text. Marketing Communcations in Ireland.
IAPI AdFx website shows great case studies on great markeitng campaigns and it is free to download their case studies. Dummies Guide to Marketing - a bit US focused, but the principles are all there in simple format
    GOOD LUCK

"Crossing the chasm" by Geoffrey Moore is the bible for hi-tech marketing. OP, although you may not be in hi-tech, there are some interesting concepts that can be brought over into mainstream marketing

'Hot Button Marketing' is the best one I've come across based upon what you seem to want.
