Suggest some GOOD newspapers?

    Hey folks,

my family always get the Evening Herald, so I looked at the front page yesterday and the headline was WHAT CHEEK, the article starting off with...

So, child killer Wayne O'Donoghue is "upset" about press coverage of his sentence. RObert Holohan's killer has even threatened to sue newspapers who carry claims that the crime may have been sex related. If he is so "upset"(sic) then today we invite him to go ahead and sue.

Now, I don't mean to imply that the Herald is usually a good paper, but this is getting ridiculous...

The headline on page 5 is DO YOUR TIME LIKE A MAN!

Is it a newspaper or someone's diary?

Can anyone suggest some good papers that don't write this biased drivel? I just want news! I know that broadsheets would be alot better, but I hate holding them, they're too big :p A good compromise?

    Thanks!

The 'metro' edition of the Times or Independent :)

is there a metro version of the times too now? my preference is for the compact Indo..compact newspapers the best thing since sliced bread!

I like The Guardian (also compact). The lack of local/Irish news is a bit annoying though.

Don't understand people who buy tabloids at all. There's simply no content in it.

I think I've seen it somewhere, perhaps in the north, perhaps in my imagination, not sure..

The Guardian is great value for money and contains some fine articles.

I've never read the Gaurdian, I'll have a read of it tomorrow.

IMO the independent is becoming more and more like a tabloid. The articles are skewed and biased. However I do still buy it because i like Miriam Lords pieces as well as some of the other journalists.

The Village isn't a bad read. It's only a weekly thing so it doesn't really cover 'breaking news' or anything like that.

The Independent and the Herald recently copied one of their articles almost verbatim, it was about the Ryanair pilot who zoned out and the co-pilot had to take control of the aircraft.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,367 ✭✭✭✭Sleepy

Yeah, they had an article about that in last weeks Village monkeyfudge.

Personally I think the only newspaper in this country worth the paper it's printed on is The Irish Times. I don't think there's a metro edition of it yet but The Times (i.e. the English paper) is now printed in a compact format.

Would love to see the Irish Times follow suit, a broadsheet is fine for reading at home or at your desk but the compact edition is far more suitable for commuters...

It's bound to be only a matter of time

I used to like the Irish Independent because there was a bit of reading in it and it was available in compact edition for the bus.

At 1.50 a go though (every day), I decided that Indo really wasn't worth it and then I got a paper that was really smudged inside so decided to have a look around. I feel it has gone downhill a bit as well on quality.

I now read the (English) Times at 90C a go, it is jam packed full of World news and reviews etc. It doesn't seem as obviously biased as other papers do. (Maybe it is and I just can't see it)

I would give the Irish Times a go if they went compact.

The Irish Times on a weekday and Saturday IS the best newspaper for quality

The Guardian is probably the best newspaper for international news

On a Sunday it is a matter of personal preference:

I like the Sunday Tribune, but most people view the Sunday Times as the best value newspaper.

I'd say the Irish Times won't go compact. They will probably follow the 'Berliner' format of the new-style Guardian newspaper. It's a very nice format and size, and avoids the accusations of 'dumbing-down'.

Financial Times, Irish Times, The Times, Guardian, Sunday Tribune, Sunday Business Post, Village & Economist are all good.

Anybody notice that Brendan O'Connor practically writes all of the Sunday indo?
Pile of poo it is as well. Irish Indo is really just a tabloid masquarading as a broadsheet.
As for actual tabloids....who reads them except for sports and tits?
Would only ready the irish times TBH. It can be a bit poncy but it definately is the only decent (non-specialist and irish) paper in this country.
Oh and its only 70c in my college.
Really can't complain there. But yeah a metro edition would be nice...

We get the Irish Times, Guardian, and the Observer on Sundays. As for Magazines, the feller gets Edge, Foggy Notions, some other wanky indie music mags, whilst I get Private Eye every 2nd Friday, (Phoenix has become a pile of crap- I've seen more controversy and satire in Ireland's Own) and the National Enquirer- purely for the lulz!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 738 ✭✭✭TheVan

Well the Irish Times is the only real quality paper in Ireland.

The Village has some great writing but unfortunately is there to serve Vincent Browne's agenda.

The Independent is ok but tends to veer towards the tabloid end and has been getting worse in that regard in recent times.

I saw that Evening Herald article and it nearly made me sick. We have courts for a reason, the Evening Herald is not judge and jury. I hope there is some way to make them pay for such irresponsible journalism.

So in conclusion....the Irish Times (and its only 70c on college campuses!)

Crosswords in it are excellent, I get it most days.

The Irish Times on Monday-Saturday for Irish news or The Guardian for international news, and you can't beat The Sunday Times or Sunday Business Post on a Sunday.

The Herald is tabloid, drivelling muck written by trailer trash for trailer trash.

Financial Times, Irish Times, The Times, Guardian, Sunday Tribune, Sunday Business Post, Village & Economist are all good.
defo all above for me. the indo stable of titles are becoming rags and highly sensationalist eg holohan case and liam lawlor case and frank connolly issue

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,494 ✭✭✭ronbyrne2005

dont know why people think the compact editions of broadsheets are any different, its the same news and comment in different sized paper.
as for tabloids, they are generally devoid of any real news unless a polemic spin can be cast on it.the rest of the paper could be an article in any days paper and have no news value eg:stunner kelly strips for us! or dear ann i slept with my boyfriends dog or women are ten times more likely to buy shoes etc

Why would anyone waste their money on tabloid newspapers? It's only entertainment and contains no real news.

I find broadsheets easy enough to read if you fold them in four so it's tall and narrow. Takes just a little practice.

  • Hosted Moderators Posts: 11,362 ✭✭✭✭Scarinae

The Irish Independent is basically a tabloid eithout the page 3 girls. The only Irish daily newspaper I would read is the Irish Times, I don't risk reading it on the dart in the mornings though unless I have a seat! I usually just read it when I get home from college

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 345 ✭✭thejovialhost

The Irish Times or The Financial Times, daily. I used to like the Indo but these days, it's pure muck. Only get it in the house for the TV Guide! Irish Times at 70c in college, how can i resist??! It's great on friday too - Business and Entertainment Sections.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

Guardian, or the Irish Times.... But I do like the Compact Independent.

The guardian comes in the "Berlin" size. God knows why it's called that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,598 ✭✭✭cashback

To be honest I always thought the Herald was slightly above the rest of the tabloids but after seeing those O'Donohue headlines I've changed my mind. Whatever about the truth behind the headlines, they're just opinions with no shred of impartiality or tact.
The Irish Times is probably the best out there, esp on a Saturday.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,006 ✭✭✭✭Zebra3

    Irish Times and Sunday Trib.

Guardian is a great paper, but why buy it when their website is free? :)

The great thing about not buying tabloids is you don't have a clue what goes on in crap like Big Brother, Pop Idol, etc. and are saved from so many mind-numbing conversations. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,668 ✭✭✭nlgbbbblth

I buy The Guardian and read The Irish Times at work.

On Sundays I get The Observer and The Sunday Tribune. Sometimes I buy The Sunday Business Post.

Red-top tabloids are a joke. And they're crap for sports too. Anyone who uses this as an excuse for buying/reading one is lying. In fact, anyone who buys a tabloid or takes them seriously is a braindead loser.

I wouldn't go that far now.

Some like the Star and the Herald do a lot of coverage of amateur sports that people participate in and there is no other real media coverage of these events.

No its a cross, it's slighty larger, but thinner, it takes its name from Der Berliner, the german paper, which is obviously that size.

Also another handy difference between the Guardian and a tabloid is well, noble prize winning economists, like Joesf Stiglitz, don't generally write full page editorials in tabloids.

The Daily Telegraph. One of the last REAL newspapers available here. Though I suppose it's only a matter of time before that too goes tabloid like The Times. (I refuse to describe The Times as "compact." It's a tabloid now no matter how much they try to disguise the fact.).

    Pulling your leg.
    etc.

edit: actually it's a quote from a story in a comic called Champ. Sometime in 1984.

Your inbox seems to be full.

You'll have difficulty in successfully suing for slander on the basis of something written on an internet message board.

The fact that illegalheadbutt is unlikely to be your real name may count against you also.
