    Hi,

Please move if this is the wrong place, I coulnt find a consumer rights type board although Im sure its there.

A few days ago i bought a printer in Peats that Im now not happy with (it was an impulsive buy of a Canon when what I really wanted was a Hewlett Packard which wasnt in stock). Its not as user friendly as the Hewlett Packard ones Im used to and Id like to get my money back. Ive put it together and installed the cartridges. Am I within my rights for a refund on just changing my mind? Ive heard Peats can be difficult when it comes to retuned goods so Id like to whats what before I go in.

You don't have any rights tbh. If it was faulty or if it didn't do what it should (ie print), then you could demand a replacement or refund. But seeing as you just don't like it, you legally don't have a leg to stand on. Peats might give you a credit note as a gesture of goodwill but don't count on it

Ive heard that you can change your mind as long as its within 30 days of purchase. Could someone clear this up, thanx.

The 30 days is referred to as the "Cooling off" period. It doesn't apply in your case though. It only applies if the product is unopened and unused so the retailer can resell the product as new.
You have opened the printer and installed the ink cartridges so you have forfeited the "cooling off" period as the the printer is now classed as used/secondhand.
Sell it privately yourself and buy the one you want.

Look up oasis.ie, or the website for conusmer affairs, ODCA. You are not entitled to a refund simply because you change your mind. THe Sales of Goods Act just says that the goods must be of merchantable quality and fit for the purpose they were supplied - as there is nothing wrong with the printer, therefore, you are not entitled to a refund. There is no "cooling off" period as with insurance and certain otgher type products.

The goods have to be of a resaleable quailty for the retailer if returned( most consider opening the box voids this)...the problem is this is at the desgression of retailer considering you have opened and usedthe printer...ring peats and speak with the manager he may be willing to exchange it for you but its unlikely that he will refund your money...i wouldnt but i would exchange the product to retain your business( i was retail manager for 3 years)

I'd say no. You bought it, it works. Just because you didn't make an informed choice and bought on impulse, that's hardly the retailers fault, now is it? They may help you out of the goodness of their hearts, but if I was them I wouldn't. You made a purchase on impulse. We've all done it. Put it down to experience, suck it up and take responsibility for your actions. End of rant.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Once the box is opened and the unit is function correctly you do not have a leg to stand on.

If the unit fails within 30 days the norm is its called as a DOA and you are offered a replacement or refund. After 30 days the standard warranty normally kicks in. Most times you will have to contact the Manufacturers support lines to get them to give you authorisation to return it to the supplier if its a DOA as well.
