League scoring systems.

What is the best/optimum scoring system for leagues?

I know of several systems, but each has its drawbacks. The ones I know are:

    A) Last player gets 1 point, second-last player gets 2 points.....winner gets <# of players> points.

    B) Each player gets points equal to the amount of money won.

There's also the 'fixed' scoring system. But that doesn't take into account the number of players for each tournament, which would be unfair. I.e. winning a 6-player STT should not get the same points as winning a 10-player STT IMHO.

For our home game, we are using system A. And it seems to work fine. But I'm wondering if there's a better system to use. System B looks good but doesn't make people play every week, since only a few players get points.

    Any ideas/thoughts out here?

System A is fine if you ask me. Some folks say it should be on money but to encourage people to keep playing (i.e. for the benefit of the league) A works better.
In Nicky's BCOOP of course scoring by money won would have been better :)

I have run a couple of very successful leagues in a local pub over the last couple of years so for what it’s worth this is the points system I use.

    Average field is anything from 20 to 40 runners with the Top 10 getting points as follows – 20 – 15 – 12 – 10 – 8 - 6 - 4 – 3 – 2 – 1.

At the end of the league (18 weeks) the top 10 automatically qualifyfor the Grand Final and depending on their final position in the table were awarded Bonus Chips to bring to the Final. e.g. the qualifiers all start the final with 5,000 chips plus any Bonus Chips won during League. The winner of the League receives 3,000 bonus chips, runner up 2,500 etc. Also award Bonus Chips each week for the top 10 – winner – 400, runner up – 350 etc. and every player gets 50 bonus chips each time they play. Each night bonus chips (100) awarded for best hand, biggest pot, bad beat, bounty etc. This system rewards the players who turn up every week. Of course you can only use your Bonus Chips if you qualify for the final but it rewards the consistent performers. As the best players throughout the league will start the final with an advantage.

To keep the interest of players who have no hope of making the Top 10 we also run special qualifiers for all remaining players outside the top 10 with 4 players getting the chance to compete in the final though obviously with a massively inferior chip stack.

It may sound complicated but its not and it works for us. The special bonus chips each night for bounty, best hand etc. while not worth a lot in the long run generate great slagging etc.

Anyway that’s my tuuppence worth on the subject.

20% of Prize Pool each week went towards Grand Final prize fund.

Thanks for the replies musician and Coillte_Bhoy, most appreciated! It looks like we'll stay with our current system A.

Whoa! Average rake is 10% and you're taking 20% for the league? At our home game I only take about 7-8% since with an average of 8 players more would cut way too much into the winnings. (rakeless 25 euro freeze-out with league over 12 weeks)

We use the same system as A but add 7 pts for the winner / 3 for 2nd and 1pt for third to reward the money finishers.Only running this system four weeks though but so far it seems good.

I designed a points system for use with my former college's poker soc which worked quite well....all of the details of it are at www.geocities.com/GCDpoker/...oh and we had one point for the TD just so that we could get someone to do it

We use a point system based on winnings minus entrys. With an embedded fornula drawn up so as not to illustrate actual amounts.

This is a fairly simple method of handling some issues that arise from volume of players in tournaments, volume of tournaments entered and skill level faced in tournament. The idea being to comprise a table that only rewards skills rather than a system which rewards repeated paid entry.

Ah I remember the days well...

Shane taught me the rules at Christmas when the league was already half way through. I had to win 5 out of the remaining 8 games in order to make the top nine... which I duly did! Barely even knew the rules back then, but the standard was muck...
