I wouldn't recommend sending cash - it's completely untraceable. Personally I would only use paypal with eBay, and even then with discretion.

I'm wondering how you registered with ebay if you do not have a credit card??

PayPal is safe if you read the user agreement.

I am very familiar with the PayPal User Agreement and If I were do give advise on how NOT to get caught out when buying on EBAY or indeed a seller's website via PayPal, I would suggest the following:

*When selling Merchandise use a trackable postal service because if a buyer files a claim for non receipt of the item, the first thing that you as a seller will be asked to submit is a tracking number so that PayPal can verify delivery of the item. Depending on the cost of the item(s) you may be asked for a signature fax also.

*When buying on eBay, always pay via PayPal as you will be covered under their eBay standard protection programme. BUT refund is on a best effort basis so BUY items that are listed with the PayPal Buyer Protection "shield" beside them- Further protection up to €500.

*Last but not least PAYPAL does NOT cover intangible items. .ie Links, ebooks, software etc.. basically anything that cannot be posted with online tracking is NOT covered.

    Happy trading.

    ANYONE get "ripped off"??

Paypal is OK if everything goes well.. If not, Paypal are appalling to deal with due to their inability to to communicate. The majority of sellers do not comply with the 'tracking' part of the Paypal user agreement as this part adds quite a substantial bit to the postage options offered and buyers would be fuming. I load the P&P element for Paypal payments to cover the additional requirement for me to be protected by Paypal. I do not load the P&P element for all other payment methods unless the buyer wants to pay the extra for a trackable service.

You do not need to register with a credit card for buying purposes. For selling, you need a credit card.

I have recieved cash payments from buyers (small value). I pay (& get payed) using a variety of methods: cash, postal order, cheque, bank transfer, bank lodgement & Paypal. My preferred payment method, as a seller, is bank transfer/lodgement as ebay/Paypal fees eat right into the sold price.

This is not a problem for buyers. If they file a claim, they WILL win and be refunded if seller cannot provide online tracking details.

It becomes a problem for buyers if the sellers cotton onto this little known fact and the sellers up their P&P rates for folk that want to pay with Paypal.
