Or you could just download Openoffice, it free and you can view/edit all your msoffice files.

    http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.1/index.html

The current versions of word use the Word 97 file format so all that changes is the user interface and bells and whistles. Newer versions bloat more so won't necesserily be faster than old versions if run on the same computer . Since newer versions of word can read older files you can go back to office 4.3 (windows 3.1) once you get the long filename add on, you'd just have to ask people sending you docs to save in word 6/95 format.

OpenOffice needs more memory to run than Word. Only an issue with old machines that would be pushed to run 2003 anyway and Ram is a lot cheaper than licenses.

The announced next version will use a new incompatible format too, which is a very good reason to avoid it. It will also have an option to save to PDF, marketing FUD since it just means they are playing catch-up. OO has had this for ages, and pdf995 and pdfcreator have also been around for years for your other apps.

If you are doing very fancy stuff or VBA / macros in word then you could consider the latest version, but you might compatibilty issues with earlier versions. Word has slightly better spelling checker/ thesarus than OO. If you want foreign language in Word other than french/spanish then you have to buy a new copy of word in that language or the compete languages pack which is about the same price. ( Been there with Word 2002 - even if you install two different languages in spearate foders you only get one user interface and an app to change from one to the other, the app of course changes it's language interface too - just to confuse you. )

In OO you can have as many foreign languages as you like.
