Possible Hard Drive Failure?

When i booted up my PC this morning, instead of windows booting up i received a message that the file "/windows/system32/config/system" was "corrupt or missing", and that i'd need to run the recovery console to fix it. I ran the recovery console from the XP cd, where "dir" told me that the specified drive was missing, and running chkdsk informed me that "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable errors". Fearing that all my data had been lost, i downloaded Uneraser, which let me view the file structure after it boots from a CD. My data is still all there, and seems to be completely intact.

    Now, a couple of questions.
    1) Is my hard drive screwed? I'm running dual SATA hard drives in a RAID. Also probably worth noting is that the XP boot cd didn't detect any partitions, and when i tried to install a new xp, it blue screened me, and referenced the setupdd.sys file.
    2) If the answer to question 1 is yes, whats the best line of action to recover all my data? Can i just move the hard drive to another computer and copy the data off? Is my hard drive completely unsalvageable?

    Thanks in advance.

can you run "fixboot" (i think that's what it is called) in the repair console?

Download and make an ebcd pro boot cdrom, boot up pc,type fixmbr ,chkdsk, and fixboot, or maybe use norton unerase to repair missing files, theres loads of utilitys on that cd to diagnose hd faults,it works in dos mode on winxp or win..9 etc os,u can create a: boot disks to diagnose and fix faults , do google search on emergency boot cd pro,to find it, it has utils to fix mbr and diagnose hd faults re:os windows non booting problems etc,,also download partin9.exe ,its used to diagnose and fix hd partition problems, ebcd has ntfs utilitys too, read the faq first.the ranish partition manager is handy too, see ranish.com/download .if u know sum1 with a working pc with win os , u cud use that to compile a barts preinstalled environment bootable cdr, that has even more advanced tools for windows os hd recovery, but i think its best to start with ebcd pro boot cdr.Go to netcafe and download and burn the iso image to cdr as a bootable disk. do search bart,s pre or look at nu2.nu/bootcd.You can make simple ebd on floppy from ebcd ,if u wanna start from basics ,be4 u use norton unerase. i think ebcd pro, free download has everything u need, with ntfs and dos /scsci utils built in.
