Slaves

From the Indo this morning (yea yea I know its a rag...but)... another example of how this country is going to the dogs... I'll just wait for the 'there's no depth to your thread' replies now... but just needed to vent! :D

MANY foreign workers are being treated like slaves in wealthy homes, an Irish Independent investigation shows.

Some young women are being paid as little as €25 for 14-hour days - or around €2 an hour by their newly affluent employers.

The investigation uncovered how the wealthy Irish are routinely exploiting, abusing and under paying vulnerable workers.

Women who come here to work as nannies, carers and domestic workers end up being treated as slaves, working 14 hour days for six days a week, sometimes for as little as €175 a week.

Many, who have left husbands and children behind to earn enough money to send home, have found themselves trapped in big houses, not being paid properly, having their privacy invaded and their passports withheld.

Others who hope to make a new life and friends here find themselves socially isolated.

They can be asked to do everything from minding the children all day, cooking, cleaning, washing the employer's car to being farmed out to neighbours to help at a dinner party.

Never seen any of this myself, all foreigners I know work in regular jobs in Pubs and construction areas.
I also used to work with plenty of eastern Europeans and some Africans in an International call center.

I think the problem of exploitation is not as big as the independent would have us believe.

I live in south Dublin and I see alot of foreign nannies bringing the kids for walks during the day. Every time i walk to the bus I see atleast one.

No idea how well they are being treated tho

I presume they get paid less as they'd get free accomodation and food, as well as other things too.
Ok €2/hour is pushing it though.

They (ones i see) don't look neglected or anything. One of them I see has nice outfits etc. Maybe that family pay for that sort of stuff for her? She looks like she is from the philippines or something

Dunno whats wrong with working for another employer. I've been in places where i've been asked to go accross the road to help out. Obviously if after a days work they're expected to do it all again next door thats not on.
