Was wondering if this is true.

There is a sign up in my dance studio that says that after you excerisize intensively you have a two hour window where you can eat and your body burns the calories at a really intense rate. But that if you DONT eat, your body will detect that its calorie intake is not meeting what its burning and this makes your metabolism slow down - thus creating a situation where excersize makes you GAIN weight.

    LazyDaisy,

My understanding is slightly different to this; with the same outcome.

If you don't eat anything after a workout, but your metabolism spikes, your body actually metabolises some of your lean muscle tissue.

As your ratio of leam muscle mass to body fat goes down, as does your metabolic rate.

For this reason, it's my understanding, it's important to eat something after a workout, preferably including proteins...

    *sighs*

The only time your body will use ANY muscle tissue is when it is in a state that requires amino acids. As your body requires amino acids roughly every 2 and a half to three hours, you can pretty much time this from the last time you ate.

The state of your metabolism will never affect this one way or the other. If you excercise intently then yes, the boosted metabolism will burn more calories, whether you eat them or not. SO, if you don't eat anything it will need to get some stored energy, i.e adipose i.e fat.

BUT , if you do not eat anything then your recovery will be diminished and you will be a lot worse off the next day. My advice, whether you are dancing of lifting weights is that you have about 20 to 30 grams of protein and about 20 to 40 grams of carbs after all workouts. It will give you enough to ensure recovery but will not hinder the fat burning effects of the workout.

Finally, go back and re-read the sign. When you do think about what you posted here very carefully. How can a lack of nutrition with an amped up metabolism result in weight gain? Whether you eat or not, your body always has a source of energy availible.
