hey, im just wondering what is the equivalance of say a 3 optical zoom in terms of slr?

also a 10 optical zoom aswell for that matter?

can you compare slr cameras with opticals?

Now I'm no expert but I thought that 3x zoom meant exactly that - 3 times the difference between the smallest focal length(?) and the largest e.g. 10mm-30mm or (more commonly) 28mm - 84mm or 100mm - 300mm

I assumed that 10x zoom is just a multiplication of the lowest focal length(?) e.g. 28mm - 280mm

And I thought a SLR camera is an optical camera. Maybe you're comparing digital SLRs to optical SLRs? I think they are comparable (and in some cases the lenses are compatible!)

Hope this was (some!) help to you.

If you check http://www.dpreview.com you'll be able to find it. Just find your camera and the max and min focal lengths will be listed. That'll give you some indication.

For example, my digital (Minolta DiMAGE S414) has '4x optical zoom' and is 35mm-140mm according to dpreview. Zoom Wide and Zoom Tele are the two specs to look for on the list.

They don't all use 35mm as the lower value so 3x or 4x etc is pretty meaningless other than telling you there's a relatively decent range.
