I wouldnt bother going in the winter.. Best to wait till a nice sunny day.. Otherwise the animals are usually asleep and out of sight...

Last time I went was August.. Myself and the bf brought our little godson and it was a complete let down... All the restaurants were closed, we couldnt even get him an ice-cream... And that African Safari thing is just a huge lake with a footpath around it.. Iv yet to see any animals on it ????

Winter really is not the best time to go. In fairness to the zoo it was made bigger in recent years and many of the displays are better than when we were kids.

I have to say I disagree with the posts above.

I think Dublin Zoo has improved greatly in the last few years with the expansion and general upgrades.

On the subject of the time of year, I went last January (normally go 2-3 times a year) and found it to be really good. There weren't the huge crowds of the summer and I found that all the animals that are normally hidden away (mostly the big cats) were far more visible. They were either moving around, or asleep in their shelters - in other words in plain view.

I think the zoo in January has a really nice feel to it.. deffo go along!

The dinosaurs are great, I love it when they feed the T-rex.

    Oh wait,

I actually went with my ex a while back (so not great memories on that part) but to be honest I had a great day! The place is amazing!

No pandas but sure you can't win them all!

Didnt they have the 'Dino Live' exhibition there years ago?

I went up there last Tuesday, had a good day. No crowds pushing around the place, just a nice stroll around and a look at the cool animals. Spent about 2 hours in there with the ex-gf(weird situation)

How about a boards.ie trip to the zoo?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

Awwww man that was yeeeears ago...

I still remember being taken out of school early 'cos a guy my mam knew worked there and got us into the little opening party they had for loads of kids there.

Remember following the "dinosaur footprints" around the zoo?

    Good times...

Loved it... i was right in the middle of my 'Dinosaurs are cool' phase so that was a dream come true. My whole life since has been one big anti-climax.

EDIT: I think i was at that opening party?

I was there a month ago or so and the elephants weren't there. Which is a pity, because elephants are great.

I'm not getting into the "Zoos good or bad" debate, but anyway
Last time I was there, we left it a bit late and by the time we had done the rounds, a lot of the animals were inside, that was during the summer.
If I were you, I'd go before lunch time if you want to see it all.

I was there 2 weeks ago. The Polar Bears are gone to a Hungarian Zoo, the elephents are gone to some other european zoo. The African plains is great.
The zoo is way bigger and better now than it was years ago.
There is a pair of penguins building a nest... she is just lying there while the poor sap lad penguin walks off and brings back twigs and leaves. Bless em.
Do go, its a nice stroll.

I went last summer, it was very good. You'd want to give yourself 3 hours or so to have a good look around. Also try to get there early as when I was there by the time I got to the African Plains at around 5pm all the animals were locked up indoors ready for the night.
