I have an LG DVD Drive 16x52x and its driving me crazy. When ever I put a CD in and it starts to spin up its unbelievably loud, everything on the desk starts shaking ala the glass of water in jurassic park. I have another DVD drive(NEC DVD±RW burner, ND-3550A, 16x) and its grand just a low hum when the CD is spinning up.

Does anyone know if theres a way to keep the drives inactive until you actually want to access something from them, like if I open my library in Windows Media Player the CD drive spins up and I cant even hear the music I'm playing!?
Also the LG DVD drive is quite fast and I vaguely remember you can actually change the speed the read DVD's?

My DVD drive does that sometimes, I notice that generally the door isn't all the ways in and a a little nudge by pressing your thumb against the tray door and apply a little pressure helps to reduce the racket and vibration it makes.

Nero drive speed will change the speed of the drive

and if you go into the properties of the dvd drive you can disable autoplay by selecting the options you want the drive to perform when you insert a disc into the drive

ps you dont have to install nero just drive speed , its a fairly small programme

Unfortunately that involves installing more software on my already cluttered C: drive.

Actually just found a program called tweakui and it helped me disable them the way I wanted. Now off to the f/s forum to sell my DVD drive ;)
