Just want to get some answers on this, when i was young for a length of about 3-4 years i had this dream, it was in two different rooms in two different houses, that i lived in both. Anyway, it always happened the same way, bothe rooms have the same layout, the door opens in to the left so i would walk into the room and from right to left look around the round and just as i got to the left and looking behind the door, i would see a dark shadow of a human figure, just as i turn to look at who it is they would reach up and touch my left shoulder and i would wake up, i never saw the face of the person, the person was always wearing black and they wore this distinctive hat, like a mafia/cowboy style hat that was black and covered most of the persons face, i could only ever see there chin and mouth. The person was always a male from what i can make out. When i woke up was always very nervey and a bit freaked.
I told some about this a few years ago and they said it was the 'sandman'????
Anyone have any ideas or opinions on this?

'The Sandman' to me is an explenation you give to children for the crud that gathers in the corner of your eye when you sleep. Are you sure your friends weren't thinking of the same thing?

As for the dream itself : no ideas, sorry. Possibly it's 'just a dream'.

Sandman = bringer of dreams afaik?

    "Mr. Sandman"

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen
Give him two lips like roses and clover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

    Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beams
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream
Make him the cutest that I've ever seen
Give him the word that I'm not a rover
Then tell him that his lonesome nights are over

    Sandman, I'm so alone
Don't have nobody to call my own
Please turn on your magic beams
Mr. Sandman, bring me a dream

The "Sandman" is a character in western folklore that is said to lull children to a peaceful sleep and happy dreams by sprinkling sand into their eyes (yeah I know, I would have thought that is more likely to make you scream in pain :D).

As Goodshape says the grit found in your eye after you have been asleep for a while is supposed to be the sand left over from the Sandman.

Traditionally the Sandman has been almost exclusively linked to positive sleep and dreams, most often with children.

This has changed slightly in modern times though, as the concept of the Sandman has been given a negative twist by things like the E.T.A Hoffman book "Der Sandman", the dark DC Comic series of the same name, and the songs by bands like Metalica.

So this is possibly why your friend associateds the modern concept of the Sandman with negative nightmares, when traditionally he is associated with peaceful happy sleep (such as in the song quoted by KatieK above)
