A friend of mine was having trouble with the usb ports of this laptop
they would work sometimes but next time he switched on they were gone!!!

He asked me to have a look at it and as part of looking at it I
downloaded some Widows updates from Microsoft.

The laptop is now caught in a cycle where it starts up shows the usual
windows opening then shuts down and starts again.

Ideally I would do a reinstall of windows but I cannot break into the
bios to get it to boot from the cd - I understand that the bios is
only accessable from the control panel within windows which seems
    silly to say the least.

None of the options given the F8 key on launch (safe mode last
settings where worked etc etc work) Can anyone offer me any help at
all please it woould be very much appreciated!!!

Suggestions from the Toshiba support site (Esc and then F1) do not work either.

I am not an expert but try this. You have got to make sure the machine is completly powered down. To break the cycle remove all power from the machine, battery and charger. Reconnect without any external devices, keyboard etc. Turn on the machine. You should be given an option and depending on the age of the machine it will be to press F1 or F2 to enter setup. For machenes made after XP its F2 and befor XP its F1. If you are not getting the option then you try the ESC key. If that does not work I dont know.
    Hope it helps,
    MC

mup.sys is the culprit here. I've seen this problem on a few laptops. I used to own a Toshiba. The Delete key access' the BIOS AFAIK. The fastest way to fix it is to just do a recovery installation of Windows.

A good place to start reading on the problem is here. Also, do a search for "Multiple UNC Provider" for insight as to what mup.sys actually does.

Unfortunately no key (or combination of keys) will break the loop so that I can access the bios or the cd rom drive to initiate a reinstall:(

Can you get into Safe Mode by pressing F8 ?

holding a key should cause it to generate a keyboard error, provided of course keyboard errors haven't be surpressed in the bios
