    Help!

I need advice on travelling to the US. I'm going to a wedding in Atlanta on the 10th of June - so looking to fly over the Thursday and head out the following week. Flying from Dublin to Atlanta (usually stopping off in London) is about €600 on every carrier.

Now its cheaper to fly to New York. I was wondering about renting a car then driving to Atlanta. I've driven on the continent before so I can deal with the other side of the road malarkey but how bad is the traffic and how complex would it be to get to Atlanta?

    All suggestions gratefully recieved,

    Cheers,
    Paul

    I just searched www.ebookers.ie again.

THe cheapest flight its giving me is €666 on Delta. And thats direct. The ones that stop off in Newark are even more bloody expensive!

I think driving is probably out allright. 14 hour drive on top of the flight. Anyone seen CHiPs lately? Well, think an east coast version. With the same number of explosions.

Maybe a train goes to where you want? Unlikely I know.

It does indeed. Buts it $100 and it takes 17 hours.

    Definitely not worth it.

    Cheers for the suggestion though.

    Using www.dialaflight.co.uk/
Our Best Fare from GATWICK to ATLANTA is from £316 (+ £60 tax).
Flying with AMERICAN AIRLINES. Leaving on Thursday, June 08, 2006, and returning on Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

Thats €550 for a direct flight to Atlanta from London.

Ryan air return including taxes for those dates Dublin to Gatwick is €50 approx

So total €600 to Atlanta flying all the way in one day and no need for the car rental.
Flying into New York and 5 days car rental would be much more expensive regardless of the carrier.

Dial a flight are quite good by the way

    Dial a flight again
Our Best Fare from HEATHROW to NEW YORK is from £160 (+ £127 tax).
Flying with KUWAIT AIRWAYS. Leaving on Thursday, June 08, 2006, and returning on Tuesday, June 13, 2006.

€50 again approx for the EI return

    so converting currency €470 approx

You would need to get an internal flight from JFL to atlanta for less than €130 to beat the €600 total in my last post and I think that unlikely as the cheapest I've found is €180 with Delta return

I think you should take the hit on the flights and fly direct. The problem with piecing together multiple flights.. i.e. three legs individually is that if one flight is delayed you will be screwed on making the connection and the airlines these days have little sympathy. The saving isn;t massive no matter what way you look at it. The flight price is not that bad in that it is probably about 400 euros. The tax is the killer these days. I have used www.gohop.ie in the past and have found them to be very good.. Happy travels.

The situation has changed slightly. Turns out my girlfriend is flying into Atlanta and out of JFK.

So I'll prob fly direct to atlanta then leave from newark or something (looks to be consistently cheaper than jfk and it's about the same distance out of NY ain't it?)
