A buddie of mine has just put in a new Dell laptop ... (sorreeeeee - I didn't mean to say Dell ;) ) ......

anyway, she quickly detected a Broadband signal from the peeps house next door .... popped round to borrow their password and bingo ... off she goes with a BB connection in her own house

She's not into gaming ... vids ...music etc, in any big way, so not really putting any heavy traffic thru ..... my question is .... could she retain this as her BB connection? .... is it likely to have any performance effect on her neighbours machine or hers ...

As long as her neighbours know she is doing it, and have no objection there is no reason she can't. What effect its going to have on her neighbours speeds will depend on what she is doing, and vice versa.

Took me 3 months to work out some kid next door was savaging my wireless connection  , little punk. It only affected me when i was playing games or downloading files, didnt really affect casual browsing. It also depends what connection these neighbours have?

LOL. There is a wireless router at school, around 5PM every evening there is a crowd of lads lined up at the window with PSPs:p

It's all legit with the neighbours ..... and she did tell me she had to have their BB password before she could connect, so protection there ....

It sounds a very handy way of sharing a BB connection if it doesn't cause anyone any trouble :)

if they have no problem with it, then it's fine.

if they are unaware then they deserve to have their bandwidth stolen.

that's my .02c on the story of wireless networking :p

You could go into your wireless router and check the ips if you only have one pc in your house and you notice 2 ips, most can also log the connections when people log on /off etc

also most routers have a wireless link light. if it's flashing, it means it's being used :)

Just like you deserve to have some money stolen off you when you go to the mechanics because you don't know about cars, right?

its a victimless crime, like punching someone in the dark*
Cremo, I hope you never plan to try and sell anything here.

@OP, has it crossed your buddie's mind to offer a contribution to the cost of his neighbour's broadband?

As some have said ... if the neighbour has no objection to it (and has actually provided you with the password!), and you have a strong signal ... then there's no reason you shouldn't :)

If you mate starts downloading warez or child porn or something legally dubious it is the broadband account holder that could get themselves into trouble as it is them not your mate who have a legal agreement with the ISP.

I'm sure she would consider that if it became a long term arrangement, but she feeds their cat for 6 weeks every summer, when they go over to SA on holiday, so this could be "Pay back time" .... :p

If I'm sure of anything in life, it's that this gal would not do anything Illegal, even if you threatened to hit her over the head for a week with a four by two .... :p

....but it's a good point to bear in mind in general terms ....

As a user next door, your mate has nothing to worry about... short of the neighbour accusing her of "stealing bandwidth" after a row or something :D

theres no problem if the neighbours know about it and agree to, its theirs to share if they want to
