Hey applying for the FAS overseas graduate placement programme
Got it all filled out except I need to write
A short essay (not more than two A4 pages in length) on the country or region in which you would prefer to be placed

okay so Im not the worst at wrtting essays, not the greatest by a long shot. But I don't really know what they want.

Usuall way of wrtting essays just dump down in no particluar order everything in my head.. but after doing that now I am pretty stuck. Place I'd most like to visit would be Japan or Hong Kong. But what to write, the main reasons would be to learn the language and just see and experieince it all. I kinda like the idea of those big cities.. probably be pretty damn intimidating at first but you'd get used to it and figure it out I think. Anyway any ideas or help with the essay?

you've somehow managed to get a degree, you want to be considered for a graduate program yet you can't even write a 2 page essay with, at most, 1000 words.

    Sorry maybe I wasn't clear

I can write an essay, just need advice as to what to put in it. I could talk about economic policy, the current strain on chinese japanish relations and what not but I don't think that would be of any help to me. I'm just not too good at writing the type of essay I imagnie they are looking for... aims goals ambitions and all that....

Take one but a unique aspect of Japanese Culture. eg. Geisha's or Japanense art etc etc and write an essay about that.

Here im giving you the essay here. Write about painting called the The Great Wave by Hokusai. You have probably seen this image before. Its probably the most famous Japanese painting ever

If I were you id avoid history. Japan is still very touchy about all that(There was a reason why the chinese were so pissed at japan a while back).

Try and make it insightfull and try and put forward a respect and love of the country. After all you want to get a job out of it dont you?? ;) But dont make it out as if your licking ass.

I know someone who did this. He said Japan is mad crazy but he loved. But be warned its VERY different culture to here. Be prepared to put your work life 1st. A 60-70 hour week could be the norm over there but it depends of course on the compnay itself.

You picked the timing well. The japanese economy is on the rise up again after 10 years of stagnation. The stockmarket went up about 40% in the last 6 months alone so what I read somewhere.

Hope this helps let me know what you think.

I always wanted to work in Japan but those long weeks are scaring me :p

A few years back when I finished my degree I went for one of these FAS OGP interviews, eventually finishing 3rd out of 10 who applied for only two jobs with a particular company in Taiwan.

Re the essay, they want to see if you have actually researched the country and aren't just throwing your hat into the ring for the laugh (as everyone more or less does).
