Running Scared

I went to see Jarhead on friday night but it was sold out when I got there so I went for the next movie starting which happened to be Running Scared.

I liked the movie alot but I was very let down by the
cheap fake death bit at the end

My question is: When Oleg has been
kidnapped by the peadophiles and is in their bathroom what's going on with the creepy shadow-thing behind him?
For a short while I was thinking the movie was gonna flip into some kinda odd horror film but it didn't seem to go anywhere with it and I had forgotten about it until the end credits when the story is retold in a fairy-tale style picture form.

Did this motif pop-up anywhere else in the film and I just missed it or was it just a once off thing?

I wondered this myself, but kinda thought its just showing that they are evil, really. Still not too sure, now that i think about it!
