I know this has come up before...what is it with RTE and thier aversion to showing filums in a widescreen format? Flicking around last night I saw they had Magnum Force on RTE 2 but with half the action and characters missing!

C'mon get with it, people wont flood the switchboard asking why there are two black areas above and below the screen!

    Mike.

Uh, not really. If it's being broadcast in 4:3 a widescreen TV won't solve anything.

I wholeheartedly agree anyway, watching films on RTÉ is almost not worth it. Star Trek: Nemises is on at the moment (complaints about the film itself is another thread ;) )... 'big-screen' space film with half the action lopped of the sides -- and that bloody white RTE TWO logo sitting well into the screen is woefully distracting against the dark of space.

Another thing that gets me is their advertising. They just can't make a film sound interseting to save their lives. The current Galaxy Quest advert is a prime example -- dreadful voiceover: "a load of people you don't know.. and SIGOURNY WEAVER!"... what?! Who gives a ****e about Sigourny Weaver?! And Tim Allen, Sam Rockwell and Alan Rickman are unknown now?

    Muppets.

Was a bit odd of RTE paying lots money to show a recent big-budget film like Star Trek Nemesis at 1 o clock in the morning. Why don't they show it Thurs/Sat evening when tv seems to be dead.

And then they're showing a much older film (Galaxy Quest) at prime-time on Sunday evening

On Sky Digital, RTÉ normally shows films in anamorphic widescreen.

If they don't, it's because they weren't given a widescreen copy.

So I'm not really sure what you're complaining about.

But are trek movies a big pull on tv? I don't know? Considering the fanatacism of the breed I'd imagine nearly anyone who'd want to see it would have already done so by now (plus probably bought it / rented it to death too)?
