    open your commannd prompt and type
    ping www.boards.ie

    or "ping" whatever website/server you are trying to reach

    To ping
    Start>Run> Type: "cmd" > Type: ping "www.yoursite.com" > resullt.

    And while were at it a traceroute is
    Start>Run> Type: "cmd" > Type: tracert "www.yoursite.com" > resullt.

    Thanks for that info, Now as i don't know anything about ping rates and that would this test and this test be a good or a bad indicator of my suitability for online gaming. What do the abbreviations mean and which is my "ping"

    tbh they're pretty shocking, perhaps you have a firewall delaying them

    basically it's taking 443 or so milliseconds for a packet of info to go from your computer and to come back.....it took around 43ms on mine when I pinged boards

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 101 ✭✭Fionn_McCool

    Those are extremely bad results if you wish to game on the connection.

    The main thing you are looking at in those results is the "time"

    In your results your ping to boards is constantly over 400milisecends.

    in gaming terms, this would mean, if you were playing an fps, if you clicked your mouse to shoot your weapon it would take an extra 400milisecends for the server to register you as shooting, which is a long time.

    Ideally, for a good gaming connection your ping should be 50miliseconds or lower, the lower the better really, although in some games pings off 100miliseconds or slightly higher are ok

    Oh right now i understand the basics of pinging, I wasn't expecting it to be good as I'm not on broadband connection per-say only a Satellite one-way, i often wondered how it fared ping wise compared to ADSL now i know thanks ruggie. Give me some of that cool, clean smooth duff bear. ....... Marge I'm going to Moe's.

    Latest Ping, after pinging boards, With the Satellite Connection,

    450 milliseconds
    451 milliseconds
    464 milliseconds

    Pinging With the Skydsl (satellite side of it turned off)

    212 milliseconds
    203 milliseconds
    203 milliseconds

    Surprisingly the Dialup easily beats the Skydsl. Would ISDN be any faster? What sort of ping is required for Voip? I’m not actually expecting to get any good results but I’m just curious is all.

    Thast unusable for voip man. And yes ISDN would be lot better.

    voip will work over 56k, i've done it before, sure you can get crystal clarity over it as long as you use better codec's . As for ping times, this is over a standard eircom DSL line:

    oracle:~ dave$ ping www.google.com
    PING www.l.google.com (64.233.183.99): 56 data bytes
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=0 ttl=247 time=45.446 ms
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=1 ttl=248 time=45.534 ms
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=2 ttl=248 time=43.233 ms
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=3 ttl=247 time=45.892 ms
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=4 ttl=248 time=43.321 ms
    64 bytes from 64.233.183.99: icmp_seq=5 ttl=247 time=46.167 ms
    ^C

    (from a mac by the way)
    If you want to see how a host handles traffic send them a file (if its your mate) network conditions change with high volumes of traffic.
    Personally i have business broadband at home, ping times are about 30ms. Don't game, apart from quake3 arena the odd time (compiled on my mac)

    Satellite ? that's like 36,000 Km each way of course it will be slow since the signal can't go faster than 300,000 Km per second

    Try a ping to www.westnet.com.au for comparision

    I'm currently in Brazil and I get way better pings to boards.ie than that (route goes via New York and London)

    PING www.boards.ie (82.195.136.250) 56(84) bytes of data.
    64 bytes from boards.ie (82.195.136.250): icmp_seq=1 ttl=51 time=263 ms
    64 bytes from boards.ie (82.195.136.250): icmp_seq=2 ttl=51 time=261 ms
    64 bytes from boards.ie (82.195.136.250): icmp_seq=3 ttl=51 time=264 ms

    ISDN will give you pings only slightly higher than RADSL and a solid 64kbit (or 128kbit) link, not the stuttering attempt at 40-50kbit you get on dialup. Get thyself ISDN. Even browsing must be a pretty horrible experience on that satellite link.
    You could of course use ISDN in conjunction with your satellite service and it will improve the situation a little but I doubt you'll bother after trying ISDN on its own.

    Here's a traceroute for anyone interested...
    traceroute to www.boards.ie (82.195.136.250), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets

    OK I never knew about these pings so I just did a test for boards. The results were as follows;

    Time=11ms
    Time=9ms
    Time=13ms
    Time=11ms

    Is this good enough for gaming!

    By the way I'm with IBB.
