    Hi,

    How is Mycoplasma diagnosed?

Presuming it's via a blood test.

If so, is it a specialised blood test, i.e. not in the average batch of investigative blood tests?

    Thanks.

There are specific tests for mycolplasma which can help point to a diagnosis, but a single blood test is not sufficient to make a diagnosis.

You can look for cold agglutins which cause sedimentation of red blood cells when cooler than 37C. This is non-specific and can occur in other viral infections, but taken with a clinical picture of an atypical pneumonia, strengthens the case that it is mycoplasma.

The other pointer to this is someone who has a chest infection and is treated with augmentin and doesn't get better points to mycoplasma being the cause as it is resistant to augmentin.
