Friend of mine says she got penalty points for speeding either in 2002 or 2003 and wants to check if they are still on her license? getting insurance renewal soon. Is there anywhere you can check this on web or do you have to ring Garda station to check? thanks

Would like to know too. I received a speeding fine in July and paid it, but received no notification of penalty points, do I have/not them?

A mate of mine got caight too, paid the fine, rang up to check but no record of points on his licence, something to do with the fact the the Department of Transport doesn't link well with Dept of Justice.

Any thoughts? My insurance due for renewal in 2 weeks, do I tell or not? do i have or not have points? How do you check without gettin caught?!?!

So did I... doesn't time fly....

from http://oasis.gov.ie/transport/motoring/driving_offences.html "A system of penalty points was introduced in Ireland on 31st October, 2002."

The only way to check would be to make a FOI application to see what is on your record.

Yes, but bear in mind that most penalty points would not be on record until much later, months in fact.

FOI freedom of information. In an ideal world, you should be able to find out with a phonecall or email... but I doubt it will be that easy!

No (I think) has to be written request with a fee (not sure what it is but think it could be about €25. Could be wrong though.

They only last 3 years, they should defo be gone.

Edit: Apologies, I didn't notice this was a resurrected thread.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread again.

But, I had 8 penalty points. 2 of which are gone from today, another 2 are gone on May 8th and 2 more gone on July 4th, the remaining 2 will be gone in Jan 2014.

But my question is, I had a company car for the last year or so until recent and I am looking to purchase a car now, what is the story with the insurance? Will the premium go down each time the points go off or can i get short term insurance then renew on July 4th?

What is the best way around this?

    Thanks.
