Benefits to country life?!

Hey, I'm origionally from down the country (hence the sig) and lived in and around Portarlington for about 9 years, so I'm used to the country life. Now I live in Dublin and me and the missus have discussed the possibility of her or me buying a house down in Port or Portlaoise (or surrounding area).

Now I don't think she's move down unless there were seriously good reasons to do so.. she's a city girl and loves having everything on the door step, and I don't begrudge that cos God knows I hated living in a tiny ass village in the middle of nowhere with 0 facilities.

Question is has anything improved? Is anywhere in the Midlands 'metropolitan' enough for a city dweller, or would she just go mad? (btw, chances are if she went mad, I'd go mad too :) )

As a native of Port, I feel I must defend it! Port is not a tiny ass village with 0 facilities. It is a tiny ass town with 0 facilities (with the exception of the 20 odd pubs as discussed in a previous thread.

I no longer live in Port, thankfully. IMO it's now a town full of people with no where to go and nothing to do. I think your missus will be driven to distraction with boredom and will probably spend most of her free time with your friends in Dublin. I go home frequently to visit my family but would never move back there and just to let you know, i live in the middle of nowhere about 12 miles from Tullamore, so it's not like I'm comparing Port to city life.

There are no decent shops, no cinema, nowhere decent to eat (need I go on). I'm not a great fan of Portlaoise, but that's a personal thing, it certainly has alot more to offer than Port. IMO Tullamore is the best town in the Midlands and highly under-rated. It's worth checking out, if it's an option for you.

Hmmm.. I lived in Cloneygowan, party capital  I think maybe Tullamore would be a good option (I worked there for years and was my main town to visit), but then we'd only be adding another 20 mins to our trek to work.. 20 mins ontop of the 45 minutes it takes from Port to Heuston that is.

    It's all a bit depressing really :(

I know it's an hour and 5 minutes, but it takes some people living in dublin that amount of time to go a couple of miles into the city and you wouldn't have the stress of driving. You could relax and maybe catch up on some sleep! Tullamore is a great town to socialise in and not a bad place to live, I lived there for 5 years and would recommend it to anyone.

I lived in Dublin for a time, years ago, I love the shops but prefer country living, maybe your missus would feel that way too, given the chance.

You should consider Portlaoise a possibility. Its growing rapidly at the moment, has a truck load of pups, one or two good nightclubs and is near to Kilkenny/Tullamore if you wanted to spend a night out there.

Also just mention to your woman that theres possibly 5-6womens clothes shops and she will probable pack your bags for you ;)

There's also Tesco,Lidl and Dunne's Stores for shopping and is growing with a 'mall' area after being recently built in Kilminchy

Its also in an idle location if your woman wants to go back and visit Dublin with there being numberous bus services and a train service that can get here there in 45(train)-one and a half hours(buses when theres not much traffic)or if she wanted to drive herself theres is the new motor-way streching from Portlaoise to Naas and when the Naas by-pass is finished you'll hit practically any traffic anytime of the day(until you get to the out-skirts of Dublin but even then she can park at Red Cow round-about and get the luas into city center)
