    I'm looking for a large computer/office desk.
    Around 120cm wide/long.
Similar to this but without that outrageous price tag.
Or this one, but a little less wide :(

I'd pay up to €100 for a decent desk, perhaps slightly more.

Dublin area is preferred, but failing that online will do.

the first one doesn't have enought desk area, the second one is very nice, but maybe a little more desk area would be nice.

My dream desk is this, but it's €2,500

@gokgok: I'll pop out to them at the weekend.

I got one of these "Corner Desks" in Atlantic Homecare (Liffey Valley) for €100
    around Christmas time.

    http://www.buy4now.ie/atlantic/productdetail.aspx?pid=810545&loc=P&catid=12.2.46604

    But be warned... it's huge.
The desk (top)panel is one piece, and I "just barely" squeezed the flatpack
assembly box into the hatchback of a Mazda 323f.

I've comfortably put two 17" monitors plus keyboards & mice onto this desk at home. ( leaving PC under the desk )

    regards,
    Owen

TBH that's almost perfect for what I want, but it might be a little wide as it's going into a kind of alcove in my room :( I haven't measured it in ages but havea vague feeling that it's only 120cm wide :(

The dimensions are only the web page...

    width: 137cm x Depth: 98cm

So, you don't have to put the 137cm side in the Alcove, just the 98cm.
Anyways, that was one of the better desks in Atlantic, which was on display and assembled in the store.

There were plenty of smaller / cheaper ones.

I was in flatpack furniture heaven in Atlantic homecare... much cheaper than Woodies or B & Q

    regards,
    Owen

is the atlantic homecare one part of their "ETA Easy to Assemble" beech range? If so i'd avoid like the proverbial plague, I got 2 ETA items a few months ago, a coffee table and a chest of drawers and they are brutal. The veneer started peeling off the coffee table within 2 days of assembly (i took it back obviously) and the chest of drawers is really cheap and flimsy (it felt like the chipboard wasn't glued together properly).

I have a desk that I want to get rid of cos it's too big for the small room that it's in.
    It's like http://www.vikingdirect.ie/catalogSku.aspx?id=NT229-OK&N=3&PR=QD1
that one, I mean, about the same length and dept, but it has a monitor table, keyboard drawer thing, compartments on the right side and a drawer and on the left, a shelf for your tower.
    It's in Kilkenny though.
it cost £320 a few years ago..
I'll try get pics, but it could be a week or so.

Atlantic used to do a real wood one ( pineboard ) for corner that looked good - expensive €300-400but you got all the cubby holes.

Get yourself down to B&Q. A couple of sheets of finished MDF for the top and a couple of lengths of 2x4 for the wall rail/legs. Jigsaw and drill... 3 hours later bobs your uncle.

Total cost about 50euro. I did it almost 3years ago and have never looked back.

Sadly my carpentry skills are nil, although I could probably manage it it would look terrible :(

I'll build u one to fit ur space if u want...

    look

True, half of it is a flatpack from B&Q but which half ;);)

U pay for the bits n i'll cut, chop and kick it together.. At lease that way you get exactly what u need. U can even have a couple of 120mm fans in it to cool the FX processor box u blatently left on top of the desk when u took that pic :D

I have a very nice computer desk , it is beech , 150 x 70 as far as i remember. The monitor is raised on a seperate section to the main desk , giving you all the space you need. I can take a pick on sunday if you want , would be looking for 100 , as I am moving into a new appartment next month and need a smaller desk.

I know my parents are selling a desk that they bought from Viking Direct. They put in a huge bed in the room now so the desk looks out of place. This is the link to Viking Direct.

    http://www.vikingdirect.ie/(n02e4b55n2phlkeygao3tw35)/catalogSku.aspx?id=431-BH&N=3%20292&PR=QD1

I think they are looking for around E180-200. That's half the Viking Direct price E360 (E299 + 60 Vat)

I have been fighting with the GF about this as I wanted to keep it, but she won.

Suitable for 17in CRT monitor, keyboard, printer, scanner and tower hard drive.

3 pull-out shelves on metal runners, ideal for storage of keyboard, mouse and scanner.

5 further shelves for versatile storage.

Back panel cut-outs for easy cable access.

    Maximum tower size (H)45, (W)20, (D)42cm.

    Maximum flat scanner size (H)10, (W)44, (D)42cm.

    Maximum printer size (H)33, (W)44, (D)42cm.

    Assembled size (H)78, (W)140, (D)70cm.

validis_: I'm afraid that's too "busy" for me, too much little bits of area for storage. Thanks though.

japanpaul: That's a nice desk, not exactly what I'm looking for but might do. The prcie is way too expensive though.

The desk will be no more than 100 eur.
I will have to ask the parents anyway because it's their desk.

Go look in Harvey Norman. I got a fantastic "computer desk" there about a year and a half / 2 years ago. For me, a computer desk is just a flat desk that has lots of mouse-room. The desk that Validis has is everything that this one is not.

One large flat sheet of wood, 2 legs, and a backplane. Was in their "office furniture" section. Cost me about €100.

From an ergonomic point of view, the corner desks are the best bet. That way you can get the monitor a decent way away from your eyes and also place the keyboard in a comfortable position in front of you. They can be quite big though.

Most of these so-called computer 'workstations' are usually an ergonomic disaster area, with you sitting only inches away from the monitor and the keyboard practically on your knees. The one featured a couple of posts ago was particularly awful since it forced you to sit with your neck swivelled to the right to view the monitor. RSI just waiting to happen if you ask me.

The "Pat Kenny" of desks so ? :D

    Hehe ;)

Thanks for the Hardly Normal tip, that kind of desk would be pretty decent, but in a corner shape as it would make the best use of space in my case.

My desk was bought from one of theses mexican furniture store's (if memory serves) for around the €500 mark, I believe it was marked down quite drasticly the following week. Solid wood, very sturdy.

Take a look around some of the regular furniture stores and you could get yourself a bargain, I dont think computer desks sell that well!

If you want I can PM you the parents phone number and you could haggle with them. I rang them last night and it's still for sale.
I'm sure you could get it for around the E130 mark if you talk to the mother while my Da's at work.

WizZard, as thanks for your offer of technical assistance last week (in the computers forum) perhaps you would like a gift of a desk quite like this one ... http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/6179791.htm

The one I have has shelves on each side at the top too. Not too sure of the dimensions at the mo, can check that out though.

Disassembled and ready to collect in Donnybrook

    Sorry for the delay..
    For anyone who's interested:

    Width: 148cm
    Depth: 73cm

    Pics atatched.
Only one or two pics for now cos I'm in the shtix and have no broadband.
Will put up more pics when I get back to Broadband.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,762 ✭✭✭WizZard

@conical: Thanks for the offer. Although I don't normally refuse free stuff, I'm gonna have to this time. rosco has offered to build me a desk, so I would have no room for a second one :(
Put it up on the FS board here. You might get a few bob for it.
    @dawballz: Nice desk!

    Dawballs

taking it that wizzard is sorted

you're parents definitely want to sell?

    how much?

would it be moveable without taking apart (too much)?

I've no transport but guess I could try get guy at work to collect in van (ya'd think working for a haulage company would make me sorted, but not necessarily so.. :( )

Messiah - they're looking for 100 for it but they'll probably let it go for a little bit less if you pushed them... I'll pm you the house number if you want..
