Text Speak

Why are so many of the Mods against "txt speek"? I read more than I would post here and many of the mods and more "senior" posters keep giving out to people for text speak. Why? How many of us don't know what it is? Most and I'm assuming that we wouldn't dare use it in any formal sense. Its a bit strange that text speak is looked down upon, but bad grammar, bad spelling and bad punctuation are casually ignored as people can still read the posts. For instance if I said "Im goin 2 d shop 2moro" is pretty easy to understand and yet is considered text speak. I hate the total text speek like in the charter though, which in my humble opinion (not IMHO!!) is short hand.

Can the mods lighten up a bit?

Have you ever tried reading some mad crazy decoration font say on a horrible background? Same thing applys here. It's a lot harder to read than normal English. It also makes reading posts incredibly harder for anyone who's first language is not English.

Stop being so bloody lazy, learn how to type for goodness sake. It hurts my eyes trying to read that tripe, i dont sms often so dont no many of these abbreviations.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,345 ✭✭✭Somnus

    qwert

WHat the hell is that? And dont you think that it is much easier to read posts that are typed out correctly?

If you can't be bothered to type properly, why should we be bothered to read what you have to say? Text-speak is infuriating - people shouldn't have to decifer nonsensical codes just because you're feeling lazy.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 11,909 ✭✭✭✭Wertz

I purposely don't read posts and try to avoid entering threads where txtspk is used...on a mobile it's fine if that's your thing since it both saves time and utilises space for content, but it has to actually take longer to type in txtspk than in normal english on a keyboard and it sure takes longer to decipher...I could probably understand a post in Hacker quicker than I could get the gist of some txtspk posts.

You can't compare it to bad grammar/punctuation/spelling since that is rarely if ever intentional and doesn't usually interfere with the flow of a thread.
I think keeping it banned actually helps these kids (and the vast majority if not all of them have to be kids) use a keyboard nornmally just like they will have to do out there in the big wide world of work...

It's banned because nobody should be made read that ****e. Good rule. Infuriating crap to say the least.

Too true, ive never liked 'text speak' as i just get the impression that the person who wrote is a person who cant spell the words in question. Perhaps they can spell but chose not too because they are just too damn busy... as quoted above, why should we read what you didnt bother to type properly.

Text speak should be exactly that for text messages nothing else, actually i only use certain words in text messages like u instead of you or b4 instead of before,ec.etc

I thought that was a blank reply there for a second!

Text speak is just so maddenly annoying, it's even worse then uber leet talk (eg playing battlefield 2 last night, some guy with 10 deaths and 3 kills nails me, and he actually said: pwned n00b come bak 4 more, I wanted to reach down his line and beat him to death with his joystick )

And for the record, I've never used text speak while texting, neither do my girlfriend or any of my friends for that matter....

I did once read a message on my sisters phone, this is no joke, it took me ages trying to decipher into in comprehendable english. "o gd ya his so fin, nyway r u gn to d bt wit hm".......etc etc etc

I think a lot of people over react to people using text speak. It really doesn't take much longer to read than normal English. I wouldn't have any objections to the ban being lifted.
Although I think using normal English shows maturity and it's good practise for when you have to use proper English.

Txt spk is an abslut dsgrace shud b dstroyd
Serioulsly its beyond a joke when people try to abbreviate words like 'and' or 'for'. It's of serious detriment to one's vocabulary, spelling and grammatical ability.

it takes longer to use text speak when you are a fast typer on the keyboard, like I am

I always use full words when posting

And can anyone explain why people say soz instead of so, its txt spk, but it takes longer to write, as it is one letter longer

Yep, I'd agree with that. I don't even bother using it for text messages anymore. I find it's quicker to use full words with the predicitve messaging thing....plus with meteors free texts I don't really care about using up space...

  • Moderators, Regional East Moderators Posts: 23,238 Mod ✭✭✭✭GLaDOS

Think of it this way, people who like txt-speak can still read Englidh, but some people who like using normal English mightn't understand txt-speak.

Also good point about people who's first language isn't Englidh

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

I dont find txt speak that bad, although sometimes you do have to read it twice, But it took me ages to figure out what lol meant.

    laguage constantly changes.

My mrs said to her mum that she would burn a dvd, thats a good dvd why would you burn that? she did point out that record is a perfectly good word

i've heard that book is about to replace the word cool (as a result of predictive text)

and one that realy gets me...........

we don't say film anymore we say Moooovie

edit - my punctuation is sh*te though

I really hate txt spk - maybe I'm showing my age, but it takes forever to translate it into English.

Another reason I hate it - and I *know* I'm showing my age now, is that it reminds me of a crap TV programme I used to have see every dinnertime when I was small - Crossroads. Benny, the guy who lived in the caravan at the motel, used to say to his beloved "Miss Jane, I B 4 U I B"

    Aaaragh. Hate it.

Does that mean that Benny invented txt spk ?

Good point. I always use predictive text on my phone and when you go to say something in txt spk like "ring me on my home fone" and when you go to type fone you realise that it is not in the dictionary and then you have to press C 4 times to get back and then type phone. Its all sorts of problems like this that make me text in proper english on a phone

The English alphabet consists of 26 letters, 21 of which are consonants and five of which are vowels.

The most common English language keyboard in use is the QWERTY keyboard, which, by no coincidence, has all 26 letters of the English alphabet.

    Use them.

This is a Forum there is more than enough room to type whatever you want to say, you are not charged for every post you make and as far as i know there is no limit to how many characters a post can contain

With that in mind there is no logical purpose for phonetic type spelling on a forum as you are not charged 8c for every 160 characters you send

Yeah, I can't stand it either. The only time I'll abbreviate a word is from "you" to "u" while I'm texting, and that's only because I'm in a hurry... Otherwise, I just use proper English.

You dont use crayons to write a letter, so dont use text speak on an internet message board.

Maybe ask for a predictive text add on to boards ;)

TXT speak can be hard to read because there are different dialects, and not everyone knows all the same shorthands.

Also txt speakers tend to spell other words incorrectly and take huge liberties with grammer which makes it even harder to read. 1337 etc. aren't too bad this way.

If txt speakers posts were up to average quality apart from the txt speak then there would not be such a big issue, but having to wade through the language and there is still nothing worth looking at , again 1337 aren't as bad this way.

plus it's a lot harder to skim read them, and usually not worth bothering

    /IMHO

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,368 ✭✭✭thelordofcheese

i can see the point of it when you are trying to squeeze a message into 160 characters in a mobile phone text message, but you have roughly 64,000 characters or more to play with, there is no point or reason to use shorthand.

God gave you a keyboard with 26 letters, use them dammit!

That is from the charter.....I don't agree with that kind of text speak but I use 2moro 2day and things like that when typin emails etc, BUT not for formal things. That was my point which nobody failed to see or I didn't stress it properly.

Short hand text speak is evil, but shortening some words like 2moro, kinda, tho...etc i feel is ok in some contexts (emails and message boards) and that was the original point I was tryin to explain. ....

    I detest 'text speak'
it's impossible to read and makes the poster come across as a 14 year old teenager.
If I was ruler of the internet (any day now) I’d ban anyone who used it.
I rarely read a post by someone using it, they are dismissed as having nothing much to say of any interest or more of an effort would have been put into typing english in the first place.
