Just wondering what people on here do when the find pocket A's ?? Now i know that i can not just limp in. Just after getting burned there with a 2 pair off the flop and he bet big and i re-raised all in with my massive 8,6 two pair and he rivered his set to take it. But it got me thinking is it ever right to just limp in with aces ?
Its not the first time I have seen it either, hence the post

I don't usually post here, but when i saw your post a hand that i played recently and that i have been thinking about alot springs to mind:

In the €250 game in Citywest,
    Blinds are 500-1000
Dealt AA in mid position and its folded around to me (a player on my right is all-in with less than the bb),
The player in the bb is playing very aggresive and taking alot of pots due to the tightness of the rest of the table,
I decide to limp because i expect maybe one caller and the bb to raise.
nobody calls before the bb and he then goes all-in (10k roughly).
He actually shows TT but i really think he was going to raise with anything.
    I win the pot.

anyway what i'm getting at is the other players criticised me for limping but i figured i wasn't going to get many callers even if i limp, and if i had of raised the bb might of folded.
I think when you have AA you don't want many callers, or if you do get callers you want to be able to put them on a hand.

so i think limping can be a bad idea if you think you will get alot of callers. It's best to narrow the field and the possible hands that they could be holding.

This is my only post here. I went to a poker night last year. On about the fifth hand I got pocket aces. I just called the bb, intending not to give away my big hand. The flop was something like 10 5 2. Then I went all-in. 2 people called, one of them had K Q. They ended up getting it with a run...I never went back after that night.

on party poker last night ifloped poker aces too bad it was holdum :(

I would never recommend limping with them u have to play them strong b4 and after the flop but u also have to know when to fold em...

A lot of ppl will keep it going to the end even with straight and flush draws on the board and call it a bad beat

Sorry guys, has this become some sort of elitist board? Give it a rest FFS.

In the Citywest €250 tourney I got AA in seat one (small blind) on the first hand of the night. Blinds were 25, 50. Did I limp? No. Four limpers in the pot by the time it got to me. Raised it to 900. One caller. I bet 600 after the flop and he folded.

If you get AA or KK raise it big to trim the field. If I got four callers I would be in a very big pot and someone would hit two pair or trips.

Don't limp with AA. You expect someone to raise so you can reraise. But often nobody raises and then you are in trouble.

is this the standard of play in €250 buyin games?you make a 18bb raise after 4 limps...bit mad, and worse still is the caller!limp calls 18bbs,lol

Never try limping with AA in a tournament, the only exception to this is if you are in early position and playing at a loose aggressive table where 90% of pots are been raised preflop.
When you have AA you want heads up or 3 way action - otherwise you could get in a lot of trouble.

yep ...I agree ...always raise to cut the numbers in the hand .....much less hance of KJ KQ hanging in there and out drawing you

I agree with Chopper. Early on in an stt if I got AA utg I might limp in the hope a later player would raise, then come back over the top of him. Also if down to 2 or 3 players I might limp, again trying to entice a preflop raise. If I do not get raised and the chance to reraise again in that round of betting, I will make one postflop attempt to take it down, after that I would be very cautious.

I find this doesn't work that well though in low buyin stt's, because the players just aren't aggressive enough for you to expect a raise from LP on most orbits.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,832 ✭✭✭Waylander

I would have thought the opposite Amaru. In the first orbit in particular I think that the blinds get raised in most hands, the difference here being that often they are only minimum raised. However, a minimum raise does not really scare off any callers so there will still be a few limpers, and you should still get to act again. The only decision then is to push hoping to take it down, or raise by the pot hoping for one caller, but risking several, as allot of players at that level find it difficult to fold a hand when they have money in the pot.

All i know is that the few times i've tried it, the raise has rarely come, and i'm left trying to figure out where i stand in early position in an unraised pot with a semi-strong holding. I think most of the problem is due to low level players not knowing which hands to raise with in what positions. Most will just limp instead of raising or folding, hoping to better find out how strong their hand is on the flop.

AA Limping is bad. Is it really that hard to understand? Raise, re-raise and push. Even limping from UTG on a very loose table ain't a great idea. If someone raises, and get 2 or 3 callers, and you reraise, the callers might just come along for the ride.

You CAN'T be behind preflop. What you don't want with Aces is 1) Giving people a chance to catch up, 2) Lots of people along for the ride. Isolate and push. Better to just pick up the blinds then get involved in a 4 or 5 way pot.

In my local game recently i got AA in the first hand... i was utg with 8 to speak in front of me so i raised the bb by 4 (which in our game is quite normal such is the chip denominations.... not one person called me.... as you can imagine i was rightly pissed off.... i do have a reputation of being fairly tight though....

You get AA in an on-line tourney under $20 on the internet.... just go All-In, I guarantee you will get a caller/callers 8 times out of 10.

They put you on a mid pair or overcards, and you'll get plenty action.

Im my opinion there are 2 problems with raising from UTG with AA.
    1. You raise 3BB, a guy in early posistion finds a good hand & calls, players to his left find mediocre hands and start calling for value. You're AA now stands very little chance,
    2. You raise 5BB, nobody calls, wasted opportunity,

Personally I love picking up AA on the SB or BB, you know what the tables done, you can then raise according to the amount of limpers and come out swinging on the flop if you're called

You only limp in with AA if you are a good reader and you can lay it down, if you have never folded AA, I would not even dare to limp.

Forget everything else you've read - this is excellent advice

I always raise pre-flop with AA. Always.

Except for the other night on Pacific, when I was on the button and the small blind had been folding everything but pockets or big slick for the last two hours. And the big blind was a maniac.

I took all his money. Way I saw it, i was going to be heads up anyway, so why give him any clues?

I'll limp in with it utg depending on the circumstances (some guy keeps raising every pot and you know you'll get a chance to reraise him through the roof and possibly get a call out of him) and I'll be more than willing to fold it when things don't go my way. I'll be folding them 9 times out of 10 unless I hit my set in a limped pot. I had one of these maniacs at my table last night and I was just begging for aces utg so I could limp reraise or possibly flat call if nobody else came into the pot.

My prayers were answered and I got dealt aces as first to act and limped. He raised 8x bb as per usual and everyone else folded. I decided to flat call and what comes down on the flop? No, not one but another two aces with two diamonds! I bet 1/4 of the pot and the guy reraises. I flat call and the turn brings another diamond. Again I weak bet a quarter of the pot and mr maniac comes back over the top of me with his Q high flush and I take him to the cleaners.

limp with them all you want but you had better be ready to fold. I love limping with them utg and much as it pains me to fold them it's all that needs to be done. the guy had QJ of diamonds...
