Over a friend's house this evening and I said something about the alt key, which I pronounced ahlt. He started laughing and said it's awlt. Who is right?

    how do you pronouce alternative?

hope to god you don't say ahlternative.

i say it as a shortened down version of alternative which would be awlt.

I know why I say it that way now. I'm pronouncing it like the German word alt. Only thing I can think of. Never thought of it like alternative.

Hmm, tomatoe & potatoe, monkey & donkey, alt (ahlt) & alternative (awlternative). In English, just because it's spelled the same, doesn't mean it's pronounced the same. There are no accents to change the vowel sounds, you just know how to pronounce it, and I know I'm right ;) Saying Awlt makes you sound like a pompus git too IMO :D

    Ahlt to the death :v:

its pronounced awlt because the alt on the alt key is short for alternative, ie if you press F4, it does its standard action, but if you press ALT(ernative) and F4 it does its 'alternative' action and closes a page.

so its not a matter of picking one, calling it ahlt is like calling someone dane when their name is daniel

a video of the inventor of CTRL+ALT+DELETE. he thinks its awlt:p

No it isn't. Dane and Daniel are completely different words, plus the A in dane is pronounced AY, and in Daniel it's AH. How do you pronounce Daniel though. If you're from Northern Ireland you might pronounce it Dawniel. Others would pronounce it Dahniel. So the A can be pronounced AH or AW, depending on where your from and how you normally pronounce it.
He's American so I'm not surprised ;) Funny vid though. The look on Gates' face is priceless.

Of course it's pronounced Alt. Its short for Alternative so unless you say ahlternative, or have some sort of crazy lisp, saying ahlt is wrong. :v:

actually taking time to think about it (not much happening at work)
when i'm talking about the key on it's own i say ahlt, when i say alt+F4 its ahlt but for some reason when i say ctrl+alt+delete it's awlt:confused:

that's my point. it's completely wrong to shorten daniel to dane (i mean the phonetic pronunciation, not the spelling. dayn if you must). in the same way, its wrong to shorten alternative to ahlt.

to use your own words: "ahlt and alternative are completely different words, plus the A in ahlt is pronounced ah, and in alternative it's AW"

that's kind of beside the point. everyone pronounces it dAHniel, and if they don't, they pronouncing it wrong. unless you want to get into a discussion about how to pronounce daniel :p

the reason is that you saw the ALT key and thought it was pronounced ahlt and so learned it that way, but other people realised it was a shorten version of alternative and so called it awlt. you heard everyone saying CTRL+AWLT+DELETE and learned it that way. awlt is correct
