Channel 5 on FTA in Ireland

    Hi

If this is one of those subjects that can't be mentioned here, fair enough.

Guy here in the South East is selling a FTA system for €550 which apparently includes Channel 5 along with all the other FTA channels as listed over on Tony's site. Is this possible on FTA here or is there something slightly dodgy about it.

I haven't seen it myself, but my Uncle in Enniscorthy has it. We were watching C5 on normal analogue and over the phone got him to tell us what was on it on his system and apparently it was definitely the same.

Five isn't FTA (Free To Air). It is FTV (Free To View) on Satellite. It needs a Sky box and a Sky UK viewing card of any type. No ROI card will work.

Alternatively it could be a "freeview DTT" box and a BIG aerial to pickup Wales or Devon or Cornwall or some such place. That will get C4 and Five without a card.

Like Ch4, CH5 is not FTA and is unlikely to be in the forseeable future.

BTW is that €550 for a FTA system fully installed?

Your nuts dude 550euro - he seen u commin if u buy this!!!-
    a new sky box costs 150euro apprx and a dish+lnb about 30euro --
The card you need is a freesat card -sky sells them to uk customers for 20pound sterling-- if u have a relative in the uk get them to order one for u!
tell the other guy to put his system were the sun dont shine!!!

    I'll go even cheaper again!

second hand sky box and active card with postage 50pound sterling on ebay! -make sure theres plenty of feedback!!

Satellite is cheap and inexpensive let the rip off merchants get lost!!

    Yep, €550 fully installed.

Thought it seemed fairly expensive myself when I started looking around. It's not so much for myself, would prefer to get Sky, but for my parents.

for 550 dont bother. it is a rip off. you'd be better buying off ebay or something and install yourself, or get an independent to do the install for you. you will save loads

Just going to hijack my own thread!

If we were to go the route of getting a Sky box and dish with a freesat card, presumably at some point we could just subscribe to Sky without the hassle of having a phone line?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 32,417 ✭✭✭✭watty

Yes. Though 550Euro isn't bad if it comes with a 50ft TV mast :)

In enniscorthy you can pick up channel five with a tv aerial.

I'm in Wexford and can pick up all the uk channels pretty well most of the time but would quite like the better quality offered by digital.

Given sufficent Mast, aerials and a LNA then Freeview DTT (Digital) should be possible. The Mast OR Aerials is more expensive than an entire FTA Satellite system, but then you get some channels not on FTA Satellite.

Maplins have the kits for €130 and peats have them at €250. If you are not happy installing it yourself, I'm sure your local TV guy would do it for €100 (maybe?).

You only get C4 and C5 with an FTV card ( Sky3 - you can probably live without)

    550 is nuts. - see http://www.satelliteonline.co.uk/freesat.htm

http://www.satelliteonline.co.uk/sky_abroad.htm - nice list of free channels and footprint on one page - also they deliver to UK addresses (NI is in the UK) - No idea what sort of service they provide , first google hit - I was looking for SKY's freesat site.

So if i get a second hand sky box, can i use that for channel 4 and 5, once i get the card, by connecting it upto the existing sky dish or do i need a dual lnb? Thanks

yes you can but if its a sky minidish dish (black mesh) you need a quad lnb as they do not make twin outputs for this dish.

Hi guys my first post here
I live in Enniscorthy channel fiive cannot be picked up with a tv aerial
Enniscorthy is a cable town hardly any signal from the uk channels through an aerial. 550 euro is to much to pay for a tv system i Know where he bought it from. That Guys uncle should have shopped around the town or the local newspapers he would have got it alot cheaper

sorry. thought you could get it.
I have 5 in Kilmuckridge and I know areas close to Enniscorthy get it ok.

The system LIDL were selling a while ago contained a dual lnb. First time I had heard of one.

  • Moderators, Regional South East Moderators Posts: 3,585 Mod ✭✭✭✭St Senan

No prblem Pal Vinegar hill blocks out most of the signal from the Uk
    it's a pity because 5 is a good channel

Why would you bother with 50ft etc aerial masts? - The UK switches off its terrestrial analogue services in wales pretty soon -then you'll be trying to get Freeview-

    - A small dish in the back garden gets BBC1,2,3,4,CBBC, CBeebies, ITV,1,2,3,4, sky news, bbc news24, cnni, men and motors a whole load FTA stations and a whole load of radio and the sky box has the easiest to use and most developed epg guide! - why go driving up the house insurance premiums by havin 50ft antennas crashin through the roof? Its harder to put right an antenna system thats damaged or broken due to storms, not even mentioning the damage potential lightening strikes could cause!

People lets get with technology here!

Its only a matter of time now before ch4 and ch5 go FTA.

    __________________________________________________________
paid for by the society for no more terrestrial broadcasts!

550e is way to steep. There is/was a guy in New Ross doing the FTV system with card included for 375 I think. Not sure of any details for him though. All I know is I got him the FTV cards a couple of weeks back and he was telling me he was doing this system install for 375e.

Bridge records in New ross are doing this for 350e not sure if card is included

Also the crowd in Enniscorthy advertise this as terrestial freeview every 2nd week on the local Echo newspaper, which i think is false advertising and misleading to unsuspecting people like kmurph's uncle

Depends what you class as "a matter of time". It is only a matter of time before the Astra satellites become redundent. The correct phrase is "There are no plans for C4 or C5 to go FTA in the forseeable future".

Well it's fairly obvious that the same statement was said about itv a few months back - and the world was going to end if they didn't go fta----
Now they have gone FTA and no sooner are the gone FTA and now people want ch4 and ch5 (talk about Greed!)

well its fairly obvious that public broadcasters, want to be public broadcasters! this means that come 2008 -CH4 and CH5 will prefer to go FTA and say good bye to murdochs NDS. - Why would channel 4 stay encrypted if its sister channels itv have all abandoned murdochs system? - their not making any money from NDS - they are actually a substantial cost! and with leaky rumours that film 4 may go FTA we have no doubt what channel 4's position is regarding the system!

FilmFour will not be going FTA, but if anything FTV, or what I believe, just added to the basic package "without any additional subscription costs"

There is still no way of knowing what C4 will do. Sky may offer them a sweet deal on encryption to keep them onboard, to help rival BBC's Freesat.

five, I believe is now wholly owned by RTL, so it may go FTA like other RTL channels, though this will be down to rights negotiations. five may not think it's worth the bother.

Why would channel 4 stay encrypted if its sister channels itv have all abandoned murdochs system?

ITV hasnt been Ch 4's "Sister channel" since the early 1990's

One problem with Ch 4/5 going FTA is that transponder space on Astra 2D is getting pretty space because $ky are (deliberately ???) clogging it up with encrypted channels although tey could maybe do a transponder swap with the BeeB (the BBC could move BBC Parliament, News 24 most of the radio stations and almost all the interactive crap over to 2B withoug any serious rights issues)

Start camapin to ditich DW and TV5 from the "Irish Transponder", These are free nearly everywhere except 28E.

SES own the Transponders though, Sky only rent. (Or Eutelsat on Eurobird).

It's very simple. Neither channel are RoI rights holders for the programming that they broadcast. For example, C5 have baseball rights that Setanta holds in Ireland, C4 has entertainment shows that RTE has here etc. Until this is resolved they won't be FTA. ITV was a different situation and in theory ITV1 isn't FTA here. Although the BBC isn't a commercial competitor it is a viewing competitor so there was a greater impetus to have ITV available alongside the BBC. In theory, people could have got a FTA dish and watched BBC only to the detriment of commercial TV (unlikely but possible!).

    Become a Sky Digital subscriber!

In regard to ITV FTA. I have heard UTV and ITV1 are but then I've heard they're not. So that's why I say in theory! I'm getting a FTA kit this month so I'll tell you then.

Er. it's OK Brian... We don't need to wait for then. ITV1 / UTV has been FTA since last year. It's very definate. Two FTA receivers and one ROI sub and one non-Sub Digibox and they all get all 5+ ITV channels. And all 8+ BBC Tv. (All the regions and BBC Nations FTA too).

It is true, and this is where some confusion has arisen, that ITV1/UTV does not appear on ROI SKY EPG, but a FTA receiver doesn't even get the Sky EPG at all.

On a ROI sky box you add UTV/ITV1 via other channels or else do the "upside down card while in Interactive on Sky News" trick.

As a proud owner of a FTA kit, I can attest the fact that UTV and ITV1 are FTA.

If I was anywhere North of Athlone or East of Portliose, I would have a 45' mast at least. I'd want a mast anyway for my other licenced radio & TV activities, but it is well worthwhile receiving "Freeview", which refers solely to Digital Terrestrial TV from the U.K.

The freeview receivers are cheap. PVRs will be cheap. Also eight receivers from one aerial is easy. A freeview receiver or PVR on every TV.

Mind you I have 3 digital Satellite receivers and 1 Analog satellite reciever hooked up at the minute.
